Meet Marcela Briere

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marcela Briere a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcela, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Imposter syndrome is something many creatives and professionals face, and I’ve been no exception. For me, overcoming it has been a multifaceted process.

One key strategy is to remind myself of my unique journey and the hard work I’ve put into my craft. I’ve had moments of doubt, especially because there’s been a lot of trial and error on my projects, but what helps is focusing on the positive feedback and success stories from my clients and workshop participants. Their satisfaction and growth are tangible proof that I’ve been going on the right path.

One more important thing is that I’ve made a conscious effort to surround myself with a supportive community of creatives. Sharing experiences and challenges with others normalizes self-doubt and provides a supportive network for encouragement. It reminds me that we are all on the same journey. This environment diminishes the power of comparison, allowing us to focus on celebrating our own achievements and enjoying the process more.
A helpful reminder is that true originality is rare; almost everything is inspired by something else. You don’t need to be that “one in a million” who creates something entirely new. As long as you stay true to yourself and your unique perspective, you’re already providing value.

Lastly, I continuously invest in improving and learning new skills, which boosts my confidence. Every new technique mastered or challenging shoot completed reinforces that I am a capable photographer.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am an adventure photographer who has traveled full time over the past 7 years to over 30 countries, capturing the beauty of nature and diverse cultures. I run global photography workshops and have authored ‘Blanco,’ a book exploring frozen landscapes. My work has been featured in exhibitions and editorial pieces worldwide.

This year I settled base in Austin, TX, where I am specializing in wedding, and product photography.

I invite everyone to see the world through my lens on my blog, where I share photography advice, and stories behind my lens.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Adaptability: Being able to adjust to different environments and unexpected situations has been crucial. Whether it’s changing countries and dealing with new logistics challenges and cultural differences, or overcoming health situations. Staying flexible and resourceful has allowed me to move forward and overcome the unexpected.

Technical Expertise: Mastering many different technical aspects of photography has been fundamental. Understanding how to play with the light, composition, and camera settings has enabled me to create compelling images that resonate with viewers. Additionally, expanding beyond a single medium to include various forms of content creation has been essential for building a successful business. Continuous learning and refining these skills have kept me innovating.

Passion and Curiosity: My genuine passion for adventure and curiosity about the world drive my work. This enthusiasm fuels my creativity. It’s this intrinsic motivation that keeps me exploring new places, experimenting with new techniques, and sharing my discoveries with others.

Some advice I’d like to give is:

First and foremost, embrace adaptability. The photography world is full of unexpected challenges, and being flexible is key. Experimenting with new types of photography can be intimidating but incredibly rewarding. It helps to remember that every new experience, even the daunting ones, adds to your skill set and confidence.

Don’t limit yourself to one niche; being versatile can open up more opportunities. As I’ve found, exploring various fields and expanding your portfolio can lead to unexpected and fulfilling paths.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Absolutely, I’m always looking for exciting collaboration opportunities! Here are a few areas where I’m particularly interested in partnering:

Photography Workshop Collaborations: I would love to partner with other photographers around the world to enhance my photo workshops. Whether you’re based locally in Texas, other states, or even internationally, I’m eager to build partnerships that can bring unique perspectives and expertise to our participants. If you’re interested in collaborating on workshops, please reach out via my IG @marcelaoutside or email me directly to marcelaoutside@gmail.com.

Editorial and Agency Collaborations: I’m also keen to work with magazines and agencies that are in need of photographers to tell compelling stories. Capturing the essence of a narrative through my lens is something I’m passionate about, and I’d love to contribute to your projects. If you’re looking for a photographer to bring your stories to life, please connect with me through my website or social media channels.

Wedding Photography: I am always excited to work with clients who are looking for a photographer to capture their wedding day. Creating beautiful, memorable images that couples can cherish forever is incredibly fulfilling. If you’re planning your wedding and want to discuss how I can help document your special day, please feel free to contact me through my website or send me a direct message on social media.
