We recently connected with Marcela Herrera and have shared our conversation below.
Marcela, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
Now, that’s a question I am often asked. It certainly didn’t arise from a carefree existence. There’s something to say about perseveringly through life’s challenges and I’ve certainly have had my share ( and then some). It is, however, that realization that only comes from those experiences; every single day is a gift and it’s the mundane existence and the small things in life one appreciates most when you are unable to partake in (whether physically, mentally or emotionally), It does help to have some victories, to work hard and see the fruits of your labor. Once you realize those victories you gain the confidence you need to be optimistic. Most importantly, optimism arises from a healthy mind, body and soul. Realizing your energy attracts what you put out into the world helps too.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am very fortunate to have two passions in life. As an actor, I am grateful for the current end to the SAG/AFTRA strike. Now with the new year and the holidays behind us, I anticipate an uptake in opportunities and projects. Between COVID and the strikes, some of projects I am part of need funding and to gain momentum. So many wonderful projects to be made but funding is always and forever an obstacle. There are a few passion projects I hope to find ways to fund ( not mine but I am part of the cast) and there are some very talented actors, cinematographers and producers I wish to work with this year. In between projects, my other passion is ultrasound and women’s health. I’ve been very fortunate to take on the position as Director of Operations at SoundWaves. Owner with CEO. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Be a professional no matter what it is you do. Respect people’s time by being on time ,or early, and be prepared. Know what your job entails and deliver it. Develop a reputation for being that person people can count on. You’ll find that the successful people aren’t always necessarily the most talented or gifted. However, if people can count on you 100%, they are more likely willing to work with them more than those who cannot be counted on. 2. Keep learning and growing. Knowledge is power. Too many people learn just what is needed to do their job but the opportunities come to those who continue to expand their horizons without being told to do it.
3. Don’t worry about the rejection and don’t put time restrictions on yourself or projects. Projects or job advancements can take many years to flourish and your opportunities will come when least expected. Don’t miss them because you were unprepared or had given up out of frustration. Slow and steady win the race.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love working with the creative community! Although I tend to struggle with this push to force actors to “ create their branding”, I will volunteer my desire to work on projects/scripts that are based in different time periods. A well-written period piece always intrigues me. It must be my fascination with the idea of traveling back in time. So thence , I must also include sci-fi projects.!
