Meet Marcia Alphonso

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcia Alphonso. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcia below.

Marcia , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I believe my resilience comes from facing challenges head on and finding meaning in every experience. My cancer diagnosis was a life changing moment. It forced me to slow down, reflect, and really embrace everything life has to offer. Instead of seeing it as a setback, I chose to look at it as a lesson, something here to teach me.

For me, resilience is about never giving up. It’s about pushing through the hard times, learning to adjust, and finding joy even when things feel uncertain. I truly believe there’s always something to look forward to, even in the toughest moments.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a wedding and event floral designer specializing in creating elegant, timeless designs that leave a lasting impression. My focus is on working with clients to bring their unique vision to life, whether it’s for a wedding, a milestone celebration, or a corporate event. What’s most exciting about what I do is the opportunity to transform spaces with flowers. It’s not just about beauty, but about creating an atmosphere and an experience that my clients and their guests will never forget.

What makes my work special is the care and attention to detail I bring to every event. Each design is thoughtfully crafted, reflecting the personality and style of the client, and I strive to make the process as seamless and enjoyable as possible for them.

Something new I’m proud of is expanding my offerings to include more educational opportunities, like workshops for cancer survivors, where I share the therapeutic power of working with flowers. It’s a deeply personal and meaningful way to give back and connect with others through my craft.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were courage, resilience, and the ability to trust my instincts. Starting a business is not easy, and I learned early on that if you wait until you feel ‘ready,’ you’ll never start. One of the best things I ever did was to take the leap, even though I was scared. Courage doesn’t mean you’re not afraid, it means you move forward despite the fear.

For anyone early in their journey, my advice is to embrace the fear and do it scared. You don’t need to have all the answers or feel 100% prepared, just start. Allow yourself to make mistakes, because they’re part of the process, and every mistake is an opportunity to learn and grow. Focus on developing resilience by reminding yourself why you started in the first place and leaning on that purpose during tough times. And most importantly, tune out the noise of others’ opinions and trust yourself. You’re capable of more than you realize.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

My biggest area of growth in the past 12 months has been learning to invest in a team. Early in my business, I did everything on my own. I wore every hat, stayed up late, and pushed myself to exhaustion trying to make it all work. It was overwhelming, and burnout became a struggle.

Last year, I made a commitment to building a team by hiring freelancers to support me. It was a game-changer. Not only did it lighten my workload, but it also allowed me to focus on creating beautiful designs and connecting with my clients. I’ve learned that you can’t do business alone, and having a team, no matter how small, makes all the difference. It’s not just an investment in your business, but in your own well-being and the quality of the experience you provide for your clients.
