Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marcia Armstrong. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Marcia , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I believe that imposter syndrome is strongly linked to your identity, which is understanding who you are, whose you are, and what you carry. When you cannot give language to the value that you provide you will under charge for your services. When you do not know the full extent of the transformation you provide to your clients, you feel like a fraud and compare yourself to others in the industry.
How can you feel like an imposter when there is no former version of yourself to compare to?
Therefore, when I learned who I was, and what God placed specifically within me to influence and ignite change, that was the day my life changed.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Marcia N. Armstrong, Founder of A Purpose Life. I am a former banker of 10 years and presently function as a personal finance strategist and consultant. I specialize in educating, equipping, and empowering millennials with the financial solutions they need to transform their finances confidently.
Since I started my business, I have helped my clients collectively repay more than $100,000 of debt, start businesses, invest, and improve their overall standard of living.
I am excited to announce, the launch of my first Smart Money Summer Camp for kids and teens ages 10 – 16 years old which starts on August 5th, 2023. It is an initiative I am very excited about as it’s the first of its kind in Barbados. Financial education is not part of the school curriculum, therefore this camp seeks to close this gap. Imparting this knowledge to our future generation will create financially responsible adults and give them money principles that can serve them for the rest of their lives.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three areas that were most impactful in my journey are consistency, authenticity, and personal development. For persons who are now starting their journey, it is very important to be true to who you are. It is very easy for culture, social media, and trends to taint who God created you to be. We were not called to be common but to be extraordinary. It is important to have boundaries, core values, and beliefs because they will become the measuring stick for your life.
Consistency is key. To be successful at anything you have to master it and that can only happen through repetition. During this stage, you will make mistakes but you pull the lessons from each chapter and keep progressing. Going through this process refines you, builds character, creates visibility, and designs a clear message targeted to your ideal customer. Don’t get weary in well doing and give up, because your breakthrough is always closer than you think.
Lastly, I believe that you should always be learning. Become a student of life and improve your skillset so that you always remain marketable and aware of what is happening in society. Never get to a place of complacency and think you have arrived, because just as slowly as you reach the top of your field, in a second it can be taken away.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
One book I read is called The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. This book contained so much wisdom but I’ll pull a few nuggets that really stood out to me.
There was a question asked as follows, “How much love and abundance am I willing to allow? How am I getting in my own way?”
Sometimes we can be bottlenecks in our business because we don’t want to allow anyone to help us. But a true visionary and leader understands the importance of delegation. Moreover, how can I say with my mouth that I want to be successful but reject the same when it is being given? We have to learn the art of receiving well.
Another question that really provoked deep thought was, “On Judgement Day, God will not ask, why were you, not Moses? He will ask, why were you, not Sam Levin?”
You can put your own name in this question and really take some time to ponder on it. People who tend to live their lives through the expectations of others don’t recognize what thoughts and decisions belong to them. It is critical that you truly take the time to reflect on the type of legacy you want to leave on Earth.
