We caught up with the brilliant and insightful MARCUS BOYD a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
MARCUS, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
At 40 years old I am still learning and developing my confidence and self esteem where I come from put downs are given out like jail sentences people are not rooting for you to win you have to survive its not for the weak nobody is given you a shoulder to cry on its grind or nothing I come from a block where my hero’s were drug dealers and hustlers you know the people that had the big money at that time I didn’t know I was stuck in poverty and my skin color would be counted against me but even with that situation it made me that you have to root for yourself if no one else will so for me I started getting into things that I loved or I wanted to do like music and poetry and going to the music studio, I was dealing with low self esteem because of my Autism and with me being different and non verbal it was just hard for me feeling like everyone is against you you having no friends and no one understands what your going through but honestly I believe with me going through what I went through build me to not only have tough skin but it made my self esteem booster shot I think my first moment of turn around with my self esteem was when I started making beats and when a lot of people started liking and loving my music I was like wow they arrived hearing my music they don’t care about my Autism so it made me want to push harder with being a music producer and composer my confidence was up and in MTV head I was like I can be one of the greats
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a international keynote speaker that has Autism and I am a multi Award Winning Autism Activist what I stand for is to use my story and MTV testimony to help bring better laws and rights and benefits to Autism individuals and families worldwide, see Autism voices does matter we have to see the able and the gifts that autistic people have we have to know that even though it maybe a challenge we still can succeed I refuse to be quiet or silent about through many issues autistic people face on a daily bases they give us a month and I guess supposed to be satisfied but Autism is 365 7 days a week a everyday situation. Their are millions of families echo sacrifice have to go without doesn’t get the proper help that they need who is advocating for them who will be their for voice well I choose to be one of through many voices that speak for Autism
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Well with me being a international keynote speaker and a Autism Activist I truly believe that the first skill that I learned or acquired was patience see in this life we want microwavable success if were not moving fast like we think we should then we get discouraged and think will it ever happen for us but that’s when God gives us patience and faith it may not taste like we wanted or it maybe not be what we wanted but God always give us what we need, number 2 for me was faith I feel like patience and faith are brother and sisters and depending on God is the parents I still battle in this area I been getting better but theirs times where my faith falls short because I have to face realities life lessons and that pill is not always easy to shallow. I remember when I use to pray for things and when it didn’t come like I thought it should it made my faith become weaker but that was the wrong answer now I understand that I can’t fix it its my battle but I don’t have to fight it alone and my last but not least skill I learned is don’t stop keep grinding when you are building a business or a brand and you don’t have the investors or sponsors you have to become them you have to invest in yourself before anyone will invest in you people want to see you trying to build your ark before you ask for help I know that’s backwards but in business that’s just how through cookie crumbles, my advice for people who arrived starting their journey is to have God has your GPS know where you stand and where you want to go its OK to have a team but if you don’t have foundation or plan then it will be hard for you to follow anything pray before every move and trust your gut and keep your faith
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I know for myself my biggest growth of improvement in last 12 months will be my anger and how I approach and look at situations Im not going to lie I had anger issues which stemmed from my past as a child.not getting healed carrying that extra luggage on my back any relationship I could ever have I was so mad because why did those things happen to me instead of me thinking like I praise God those things did happen to me see as a people we are quick to blame God when things happen to us that’s bad we hold grudges and we struggle with pure forgiveness that was one of my main problems plus I’m from through streets so disrespect is never approved but in the last 12 months I have been learning different ways to battle my argue and past issues and how to spiritually to put God in front of the enemy verses myself now I am still on my growth but I praise God for my team my village and family that coaches me and helps me to go in the right direction
