We were lucky to catch up with Marcus Spencer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marcus, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
It’s not difficult for Marcus & Derod to thrive within their creative abilities. Simply put; the love for 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and early 2000 cartoon genres helped propel our creative ideas. Being connoisseur of these type of cartoons/anime, given us insight on how to develop intricate and compelling stories. The art stylings from all these different genres gives life to their respective story lines, intern gave us a handbook on how to create our term “Strain Genre” (meaning a story that has multiple genres entangled with its plot).
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Marcus Spencer, and I’m proud to serve as the CEO of DI-E:RA. I was born and raised in Bridgeport, CT, I have a passion for drawing since I was five years old, I was also inspired by fascination of dinosaurs. This unique blend of has allowed me to create beautiful art and compelling storytelling that resonates with all types of audiences. Over the past 20 years, my team dedicated tirelessly to build a dream career in the arts, not only for ourselves but also to empower others to pursue their passions. We have an exciting lineup of projects on the horizon, including the much-anticipated announcement of our seventh graphic novel later this year, alongside the launch of our upcoming podcast. We are committed to pushing boundaries and fostering creativity, and we can’t wait to share our journey with you.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Throughout my journey, I have to learn patience, not just in my own endeavors but also in my interactions with others. This growth has been particularly pivotal within our team, where effective communication emerged as a cornerstone of our collaborative efforts. The Public speaking became a natural especially between Derod and me, as we both was part of the youth ministry at our church. This experience not only honed our ability to ideas but also give a supportive environment where each team member felt valued and heard.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
In 1994, at eight year old, I created my first book, “Rocking with T-Rex.” It was a pivotal moment, my school district hosted a city-wide book competition. Me coming in third place was not just an achievement; it was validation of my potential. This experience instilled in me a drive to pursue my dreams. The road ahead was challenging but I learned early on that the most important thing is to never give up. To keep moving forward, to trust in myself, and to believe in the process—these principles became the foundation of my journey.
