Meet Marcus Stubbs

We were lucky to catch up with Marcus Stubbs recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcus, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

How did you develop your confidence and self-esteem?

– My confidence and self-esteem are centered. One of my favorite scriptures that I love is I can do ALL things through Christ Jesus who gives me strength (Philippians 4:13). Even through encouraging scriptures I have been battle-tested in a myriad of ways. There were times when I felt defeated, lonely, and depressed. But, I was grounded with a great family, friends, and community. The development process had to deal with understanding my identity, what were my marching orders and how I dared to dream. Knowing that there is an end goal in the endeavors that I had and continue to have, helped me to remember that my confidence and self-esteem continue to get stronger.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Faith, family, and community are my three core values which I take very seriously. These values give me marching orders for how I conduct my everyday life. I feel most excited about serving my family and ministry. I believe it is an honor and a privilege to be able to spend time with my loved ones and watch them grow in their endeavors.

I have the opportunity to work on homelessness initiatives with the Coalition for the Homeless as housing is a human right. I want to ensure that affordable housing is discussed in all spaces and that we recognize that housing needs to be on everyone’s radar first.

I also had the opportunity to be a part of a leadership fellowship program called the DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative (DVULI) where this 15-month transformative program sharpened my understanding of youth ministry development and that we need to look at our youth no matter what social background they are in as cathedrals. Too many times we look at our youth in a deficit lens and need to have an asset-based approach.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Knowledge – Understand your surroundings. (Proverbs 4:7)
Patience – Mind your business. Steward what YOU have been given.
Resilience – Know that there will be trials and tribulations. Stand firm. (Isaiah 54:17)

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

Bible – Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

As human beings, we think we know it all and that we understand the complexities of life. But, nothing is further from the truth that God is omnipotent, and if we seek Him first and His righteousness all things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33).
