We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maressa Sann a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maressa, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I have always been a hands-on person and through that, i’ve learned there is only so much a person can gain from a reading about a task, or a challenge, compared to experiencing it firsthand. In my opinion, failure offers the opportunity to come back with more confidence now that we know what we can do differently for next time. Of course, we all strive to get it right the first time, but the reality is that we all have different learning curves and skill levels. I like to think of obstacles as opportunities to challenge myself, grow and become a step better than before. It can absolutely be nerve-wracking to try something new, especially when it might be unorthodox, but all we can do is try.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My passion for skincare started early, driven by my own struggles with acne. At just 12 years old, I was already researching D.I.Y. remedies, desperately trying to combat my breakouts. Throughout high school, I spent countless hours in dermatologists’ offices, hoping to find a solution. After exhausting nearly every option, I finally tried Accutane, which cleared my skin for about a year. During that time, I met an esthetician who helped me with my scarring. What truly stood out to me was the personal care she provided. She introduced me to new skincare products and genuinely showed she cared about my journey.
Inspired by her, I decided to enroll in the same esthetics school she attended. It felt natural, like a career built around something I was already passionate about and doing in my daily life.
Fast forward to February 5th, 2022, when I opened my own business. Owning a business has been a rewarding, yet a challenging journey. For anyone who makes it look easy, I commend you, because it has certainly pushed me to my limits. In the beginning, I made myself available to everyone, working long hours with gaps in between, showing up for early appointments only to get no-shows, and juggling two jobs just to make ends meet. There were moments of exhaustion and tears, but there were also moments that made it all worthwhile.
Each day, I get to help people leave feeling more confident than when they arrived. I love meeting new faces, and there’s a excitement every time I receive a new booking notification. My business has given me the freedom to be creative in a space where I feel at home.
It’s been a journey, and I know I still have so much more to learn and grow. Recently, I was able to add someone to my team who shares the same care and passion, allowing me to focus more on skincare. I became acne-certified through Face Reality and expanded into using Glymed products, which have shown amazing results. My focus now is on helping clients with acne and corrective skin issues, because I deeply understand the toll acne can take on someone’s self-esteem.
My goal is not only to help others improve their skin but also to help them feel empowered and confident through both corrective care and positive, uplifting conversations in the treatment room. That’s the purpose I’ve found in my work, and it’s something I continue to expand on.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
To anyone facing challenges in pursuing their passion, my advice is simple: keep pushing forward! Remember, most great achievements don’t come easy. A key lesson I’ve learned on my journey is to be mindful of who you surround yourself with. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who inspire and challenge your creativity—it’s this push that will help you grow. Lastly, give yourself grace during tough times. It’s so important to show yourself kindness and reassurance when life gets difficult.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
My biggest life struggle that I found was effecting my work was people pleasing. Being a people pleaser has a way of appearing in your work and making yourself second guess when it comes to content creating and advertisement.
The book that helped change my way of thinking most is “The Four Agreements” by Miguel Ruiz. It has a way of re-wiring your brain and helps get past fearing criticism and fight imposter syndrome, because when you’re most authentic you will naturally attract more of what is meant for you.
