We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Margaret Curry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Margaret, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Interestingly, my purpose grew very organically from the events in my life that have been the most difficult to overcome personally. The things that brought me to my knees – those “dark nights of the soul” so to speak – are the things that shaped me, that I developed strengths through and that led me to know what I most value. From them, I’ve been led to the kinds of stories I want to be a part of telling, the kind of work I want to create. I think because art helped me find my way through those times, I have a deeply-rooted desire to create work that might possibly do the same, hopefully lighting up the paths of others who may need it along the way.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
A Houston, Texas native, I’ve been an adopted New Yorker for over 30 years, currently based in the Bronx. I love to travel and any kind of mindful movement. I’m an avid runner, and completed two NYC marathons in 2015 and 2016. I love supporting other artists and creators however I can – seeing their work, contributing however I can to their process. It’s been a great joy to begin producing for many reasons, but a big part of that is being able to offer work opportunities to people whose work I believe in.
As a multidisciplinary performer and creator, I’m seeking to help create stories that explore and celebrate the human spirit and love, that reveal the stories of how people rise above the problems of life and the human condition to make change and follow their hearts, that wake people up so that they may embrace their lives to live life more fully and authentically. I created Deep Flight Productions, a live performance and film production company, out of a desire to collaborate deeply and bravely, to create stories that entertain, elicit and evoke, that will give space and voice to the people who’ve either not been able to tell their story because they’ve been oppressed or overlooked or because no one has yet considered it “marketable” or “worthy” of what is “popular” entertainment. Stories that explore and ask questions around things that society tends to deem as taboo, inconvenient or “hard to look at,” to bring the elephants in the rooms out of the shadows and into the light, so that understanding and potential movement can occur. To find the laughter in the tears. Deep Flight is currently in production with the limited Off Broadway engagement of Lanford Wilson’s THE MOONSHOT TAPE & A POSTER OF THE COSMOS, directed by Mark Cirnigliaro and starring myself and Geoff Stoner. A pair of one-act plays about taking control of destiny and retaliating against fate, THE MOONSHOT TAPE & A POSTER OF THE COSMOS has one-week limited engagement at Off-Broadway’s The Siggy at the Flea in NYC. I’m also co-writing, co-starring and co-producing an original web series with her producing partners Burke Adams and Lindy Rogers. As a singer, I’ve shared the stage with such luminaries as Leslie Uggams, Carol Channing, Billy Stritch, Amanda Green and Ann Hampton Callaway, appearing as a soloist or featured performer at the Kaplan Auditorium at Lincoln Center, the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Hudson Guild Theatre and many of NYC’s hottest nightclubs and cabaret venues. My solo cabaret show “The Space In-Between” which debuted at The Laurie Beechman Theatre November 30, 2023, returns for encore performances on April 6th and May 4th, 2024.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Curiosity. Listening. Commitment.
Curiosity has turned out to be a superpower. It keeps me engaged and also brings a “soft brain” kind of focus, which allows for greater play and ease in collaboration and creation. For me, to be in a state of curiosity is to be willing to allow things to be revealed and discovered, versus manipulated or bullied. Curiosity keeps me in the realm of infinite possibilities: since I can never say that I know everything, it follows then that possibilities must always exist beyond what I have known. I highly recommend developing a love of the unknown. Finding a way to befriend the sensation of entering into the mystery that life really is has been life-changing in amazing ways.
Listening. Listening is such an underrated skill. To practice being able to really listen not just to another person, but to one’s own self and inner guidance and wisdom is to be able to meet “the moment” from a place of true presence and connection. And from those “moments,” so much can grow. To be willing to enter into the unknown – that space in-between two people – and really listen for what wants to be known, seen and heard, is an amazing space to be in.
Commitment. To enter into a commitment with myself around bringing a particular idea or desire to creation is something that I liken to a sacred vow. It grounds me…serves as a kind of compass around which then decisions can be made on a daily basis. How I fulfill my commitment to projects may look different on any given day. But there’s a baseline there, a value in my life that I put into the “no matter what” bucket. I form an agreement or contract with myself to nurture my work, to support and invest in my own projects. I find it’s very powerful, it’s empowering, and it gives an underlying clarity to my days that helps me move forward with greater ease and with ease. There’s much more space for joy.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I discovered applied neurology two years ago, and it has been a game-changer. There were some habits and patterns that were holding back my growth and movement forward in my career and in life in general that I could not seem to shift despite valid, repeated and consistent efforts. I found Brain Based Wellness, an online platform that trains the nervous system and body to resolve old patterns, improve performance and increase well-being. After decades of trying so hard, through countless modalities and various types of approaches, to change these patterns with little success, I’ve found that with the tools I’ve learned at BBW and now utilize, I’m becoming empowered as the expert of my own nervous system. The techniques and exercises of applied neurology I’ve learned have been, and continue to be, the portal through which I am experiencing a true self- and life-reclamation that reaches through to every aspect of my life. My career is certainly benefitting, but beyond that, my total well-being is as well. https://brainbased-wellness.com
