We were lucky to catch up with Margaret Hill recently and have shared our conversation below.
Margaret, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive as a photographer by constantly seeking new perspectives and allowing myself the freedom to experiment. Whether it’s exploring unfamiliar locations, trying out different lighting setups, or shooting in a new genre, I find that stepping outside my comfort zone helps spark fresh ideas. I also draw inspiration from other art forms like music, film, and painting, which often influence the mood and storytelling in my work. Most importantly, I make time to create just for myself—without pressure or expectations—which helps me stay connected to the passion that drew me to photography in the first place!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My journey with photography began after taking a class at Wayne State University, where I discovered a deep passion for visual storytelling and capturing moments through the lens. What started as a creative outlet quickly grew into a meaningful part of my life. Like many artists, the isolation brought on by COVID-19 created moments of creative block, but it also gave me space to adapt and explore new ways of seeing the world. I’m fueled by a love for experiencing new people, places, and perspectives—something that continues to shape my diverse range of work. From graduation portraits and corporate events to commercial shoots, pet photography, nature shots, and still life, I’ve developed a wide skill set that allows me to connect with a variety of clients and creative visions. Based in Metro Detroit, I’m currently accepting bookings and love collaborating with clients from all walks of life. I’m known for being flexible, reliable, and easy to work with—always striving to meet people where they are and bring their vision to life with care and creativity.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are kindness, humility, and courage. Being kind—to others and to yourself—goes a long way in building genuine relationships and creating a positive environment to grow in. It’s also important to stay humble; even if you think you know everything, you don’t—and that’s okay. There’s always room to learn, especially in a creative field. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is how valuable it is to put yourself out there and connect with the right people. Opportunities often come from relationships, so don’t be afraid to introduce yourself, share your work, or just start a conversation. I remember my first paid photography gig for Crunch Fitness—I was terrified. My anxiety was high the whole drive there, and I questioned whether I was ready. But I showed up, did the work, and that single moment opened so many doors for me. My advice: don’t wait until you feel ready. You might be scared, but do it anyway. Growth often lives on the other side of fear.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who is kind, open-minded, and values the time, effort, and creativity that goes into the work of others. I genuinely enjoy working with people from all walks of life—regardless of age, race, gender, or identity—and I strive to create a comfortable, judgment-free space where everyone feels seen and respected. I believe that photography should be accessible, so I offer affordable pricing while still delivering quality and care in every shoot. The best clients are those who trust the process, are excited to collaborate, and bring their authentic selves to the experience!
