We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Margarita Mantis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Margarita , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Music, as I often say, has always been the best form of self-expression for me. I also always loved writing and storytelling, and by the time I reached my high school years, I slowly but surely began to realize that I could combine those two passions, as I had already started writing songs here and there since I was 11 years old. I decided it was time to pursue music professionally in 2021, when I was 16 years old, and started uploading my work to YouTube via acoustic demos, eventually growing a following since then. I went on to take the next step, soon venturing into a recording studio. After producing my first few singles, I finally understood that this is what I truly want to do for the rest of my life.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a rock artist from Southern California. My music often revolves around life’s imperfections and how we choose to escape or accept them. I like writing about various topics, with each unique song harboring in common my unapologetic candor and empathetic touch towards whatever premise I explore. I think that I get most inspired exploring the duality of human nature, and I aim to delve into each side of our modern society and how we can better ourselves for the sake of our future. Whether it means to stomach bitter truths, traverse the complexities of human connection, find one’s footing, or unearth the nasty bile from the underbelly of our society, our flaws are where we can learn most about ourselves and truly test the toughness of our spirit! And I’d like to help stand with people through their most convoluted circumstances, and set them on the right track.
My repertoire spans from folk rock all the way to progressive metal! And I always like to try on different musical aesthetics and genre-bend. In recent years, I began experimenting with out-of-the-box ideas in the technical sphere, introducing binaural mixing, which is a technique that creates a 3D stereo sound sensation, as if the music is being played all around you in real life/time. It’s a technique I started implementing in my mixes (Engineering it myself!), and have since created an autogenous genre called Binaural Rock, a blend of punk rock roots and this feature. Although bold and unpredictable, binaural audio is a game-changing tool that spices up any track, and it’s a leap I’m willing to make!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think success in a lot of areas in life stems from self-confidence and self-love. Despite how trite it may sound, my first advice is to really love what you do, love the process itself, and from then on, self-confidence in your abilities will be born. Second, do not be afraid to go beyond the boundaries in your creativity or stay true to your vision; no one knows 100% how to do something, but everyone will confidently stop you and instill doubts. This is where you need to apply the first trick. And my third advice is to learn to be productive, draw inspiration from what surrounds us, be attentive to people and their destinies, and to the events that unfold around you.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I think throughout these past months, I’ve further defined and affirmed my style as well as improved the technical aspects of my music’s production. All of which I still hope to hone and ever-evolve!
