We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maria Baldwin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maria, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
After having my daughter in 2020 I realized that I needed to take care of my mental health. I was battling postpartum depression that sent me spiraling into a severe depression. I knew I needed help or to find an outlet. I went back to doing what made me happy and that’s art. I’ve always been artistically gifted. Drawing and painting were my to go stress reliever. Therefore, I decided to start painting again. While scrolling through social media, I watched a video on resin art. Then a lightbulb idea came to mind. What if I paint something and incorporate resin into it. So I did! I started to get orders from family and friends. Slowly my craft became a small business. Now I’m opening my own art studio downtown Parchment, MI. I get to do what I love and share my love for art with the community.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Where do I begin… I have always loved creating and helping others. At a young age I started drawing and painting portraits. Art helped me to escape reality. I didn’t have the best childhood, so all I wanted is to do is what made me happy and that was painting! Art has been my outlet since I can remember. Even through my college days, I would make time to do some crafting. My best friend would have scrapbooking parties and I would get lost in the magic of creating. Art is magical to me and now I get to share it with you all! I’m opening my own art studio February 24th in Parchemnt, MI. I will focus on art classes, dyi workshops and private art events. I’m living my dream! I get to create and share my love for art with you all.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say my best qualities that have made me successful are dedication, consistency, and passion. I believe in hard work. If I wasn’t constantly creating and finding new ways to improve I wouldn’t made it this far. People always compliment and say “wow! You’re so talented!” I’m grateful and thankful that they acknowledge my talent. However, if I wasn’t dedicated to my passion for art and worked hard. I wouldn’t be here where I am today. It takes A LOT of hard work and sacrifices to start a business.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
If it wasn’t for the support of my mother, husband and my best friend. Opening my own studio would not be possible. My mother is my assistant. She helps me in every event that I have. She’s my right hand when it comes to my business. My husband supports me the best he can and that’s by helping around the house and taking care of our kids. My best friend…seriously she understands me! She’s incredibly talented and handy. Her and I transformed my studio. We painted, installed floors, decorated and fixed everything for my grand opening. She’s also a mother and artist so we combine our ideas to make magic happen.
