We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maria Elizabeth. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maria below.
Maria, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity comes from my mom. She has always been a shining example of kindness and selflessness. Growing up, I watched her go out of her way to help others, whether it was through volunteering, lending a listening ear, or simply being there for someone in need. Her actions have inspired me to carry forward the same spirit of generosity in my own life. She taught me that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference, and that true generosity comes from the heart. Every day, I strive to live up to the example she set and to spread positivity wherever I go.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hello I am the owner of Temptingpastriesmc “Maria Elizabeth” where I sell desserts for events, special occasions, holidays, and any other occasion any one needs their desserts for. I started this business at 15 years old and what inspired me to open it was my small business class. We were working on a project and after we had finished it, it truly inspired me to open up a small business. So, I choose to sell desserts because I love baking and being creative. My business has been running for a year and a half almost, I started March 21st of 2023. What’s most exciting about my small business is when a costumer gives me the choice of choosing how their treats are going to look for their special day. I just love customizing them putting chocolate molds, sprinkles, and gold. It just takes the dessert on a different level. I currently just launched four new desserts “ mini tres leches cake, mini conchas filled with Nutella, apples covered in caramel & chocolate, and lastly a breakable chocolate hello kitty face” which I am so obsessed with. Hopefully in the future I can launch even more delicious desserts and expand my menu even more. I’m truly happy that I decided to open my small dessert business. It has brought me immense joy and fulfillment, allowing me to share my passion for creating delicious treats with my community. Every day, I get to see the smiles on my customers faces, which makes all the hard work and dedication worthwhile. This journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back when I first started my business the three qualities and skills that were impactful in my business were communication skills, adaptability, and time management skills. My communication skills were not the best because we had re entered school/going out in public after being in quarantine for around 2 years and well of course many people lost their communication and speaking skills. It was a little hard for me at first because my social bubble wasn’t the best around different people. This impacted my journey because it meant that I had to speak to new people and improve my communication skills to get better. Now I can say I am more confident in speaking to people and in public. Adaptability did have an impact as well on my journey meaning I had to go above my comfort zone and truly get out there on social media, promote myself and try new desserts for my business. Yes, I was scared because I didn’t think I was going to get sales and support but I just pushed myself out their and always reminded myself “if other business owners can do it, I can do it”. Another thing I was scared to sell were other desserts because I said to myself “they aren’t going to like them, or they aren’t coming out perfect, they probably won’t like them” but I just just kept reminding myself “we all start somewhere”. Time went by and slowly my work started improving more little by little but it improved. Lastly, time management skills had the biggest impact on my journey because when I first started I didn’t have the best time management skills. I had school and a small business and well I tried to prioritize both things at the same time but it didn’t work out. So, I created a schedule with my personal life and my business and put the days I can sell desserts and that days I can’t. This truly made me more organized and helped me manage my time wisely because like Benjamin Franklin said “time is money”.
Some advice I would give to new entrepreneurs who are early in their journey they can improve these qualities/skills by staying positive and not doubting themselves that they are never going to make it which they will their is always “light at the end of tunnel” it just takes time and patience. Another thing is you can improve these skills and areas by practicing maybe on speaking and interacting with people getting to know them or ask them questions. You have to get out of your comfort zone and explore what is out there. If you stay in your comfort zone I feel like you will never notice a change or improvement on what you want to get better at. Overall, everyday I am trying to improve those 3 skills and become the best version of myself for my business and I.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing and that I will always remember was my parents helped me build my business they gave me financial support. I will always remember this because it means a lot to me without their help I would’ve not started my small business I have today. They didn’t make me pay them back, they said it was like a “small investment” and they said they just wanted me to do good. I will always be grateful and thankful with them and friends for helping/supporting me when I launched my small business. Once again Thank you mom, dad, friends, family, school members and clients for all the support you bring me I will forever be thankful and grateful!
