We were lucky to catch up with Maria Langella Sorgie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maria , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Life has taught me to be confident. I always say and I quote, “At least I have my own self esteem.” I don’t seek my confidence through others or events, I have always been a little bit of a hellion. Thus, throwing me into the eighteen and out party, Laugh Out Loud. I learned early how to take care of myself in all aspects of life. I gained confidence through this. I became a mom young also and if that doesn;t give you confidence I don’t know what does. Kids aren’t for the weak hearted. Caring for others has always brought me joy. I love being a wife, a mom and a Nanna. I also love animals and am an avid equestrian. Riding from a young age also taught me everything I need to know about living a full life. Horses gave me confidence and I learned you don’t ride and worry about the fall. I built my tool box on that very saying. An enjoyable life is a free life and that feeling doesn’t come from people places or things at all times. It comes from within.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have been a writer from the moment I held a pencil. I always carried a small journal and wrote things down. I am now over 60 years old and still do the same thing. I have hat boxes full of stories. lists, notes, etc. One day I decided to take a peek at some of these things and put them into my computer. I have a treasure chest full of ideas. My next step was to put these thoughts and stories out into the world. And here we are. I started with a Children’s Book called The Earth Keeper’s Gift. And that exploded into a trilogy and a Graphic Novel. I then released Joey and his Superhero in 2023. This book is based on my grandson who was non verbal for the first 3 years of his life. Writing about our journey with him and his discovery of different ways to communicate was not only close to my heart but so therapeutic. And in the works for 2024 is a Young Adult Fantasy called Dead Life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My journey began with a love of writing, the confidence to jump in, and the ability to lose well. Rejections happen. Failures happen. Keep on going. Thats the advice I would give to others. Just keep going, do the work. Each project gets better and better. Accept it when it works out and deal with it when it doesn’t. It sounds hard believe me I get that but the best things in life are always hard. Be the hero in your own story.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to let me go. They let me fail, told me when I needed to work at something and told me when no matter how many lessons I received, clarinet was not my instrument. I learned my confidence this way. Confidence doesn’t come from winning things and or being the best at things. Confidence comes from taking part in things and doing the work to get there.
