We were lucky to catch up with Maria Mickschl recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maria , thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
It comes from my heart. I’ve always been the one with the idea that what comes around goes around. Sharing is caring and give with love.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Ok, I hope you have time to read.
My name is Maria Mickschl owner of Peace and Love Sourdough. At my bakery we focus on baking the best quality of sourdough, handmade at its finest. This small business started as a dream, prior to become a sourdough baker I used to be a Daycare provider, I owned this small business for 16 years. My plan wasn’t to be a daycare provider for the rest of my life, I had a vision to cook for for others, I didn’t know exactly what was the goal but I knew it had to be with a type of business that could also give me more freedom to experience other type of work ethics. So slowly I started to practice on something i wasn’t good at and that was Baking. I can cook all you want but Baking wasn’t my thing until it came to be the best thing I could have done for my life journey.
My boyfriend Ryan and I believe that Natural and organic ingredients could impact the life of our costumers. During this two and a half years of baking g sourdough we have learned ways to make this journey easier and faster and affordable.
We get our flour from a local organic farm located in Ridgeway, WI. Dodge County call Meadownlark organics. They focus on regenerative soil. The kind of flour we use is bolted flour which in short explanation is more Whole wheat, whole grain. Flour. ( NOT WHITE FLOUR). This type of flour requires higher percentage of hydration.
We also collect our water from a natural spring called Parry Springs, located in Dousman WI.
We have a variety of savory options and a small variety of sweets.
We are a cottage baker at the moment but we are in the process of becoming a comercial bakery that ways we can expand outside the farmers market. Not that we don’t like the farmers markets but the more people know about is the better. 2025 is coming with lots of surprises for our costumers. New equip and a mobile bakery. We are actually I. The process of building our future.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I was a fast learner. It took me one full hour to learn the process of sourdough, I guess I was so excited to jump into this journey i didn’t want to wait any longer. That was in 2022 and up until now I’m still learning new ways to make our bread the best bread out there.
My advice to anyone who is looking to start this journey is
Patience is the mother of all things,
Practice, practice, practice and
NEVER GIVE UP!
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The book of Life, I have learned from my own experiences, mistakes and failures. It hasn’t been easier but it has been so worth it.
Ryan my boyfriend has been my most loyal supporter and together we have learned what we can give to our relationship, our family, our life, our future our journey. He is a keeper and I’m proud of all the accomplishments he has achieved during this journey as well. This is not only about me is also about him it’s about us growing as one.
