We were lucky to catch up with Maria Romero recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Balance—something I grasp for a fleeting moment, only to have it slip away for days. But in those rare moments when I find it, when I nourish myself with the right food, movement, and love, I feel unstoppable. When those key elements are aligned, I am invincible, even I am the only one standing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My journey started in menswear design, focusing on tailored clothing. From there, I pivoted back to textiles and artisanal practices, founding a natural dye house that operated like a ‘dry cleaner’ for natural colors. Seeing the disconnect between the fabrics people wore and the environment, I launched a clothing brand—a permanent collection made entirely from natural materials, down to the last thread. Along the way, I began consulting for other brands, offering creative direction, design, and set design. This allows me to take a step back from focusing solely on my business, while mentoring others and learning new things, which is always so refreshing!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience, a deep sense of community, and unwavering passion—these three qualities have helped me sustain and grow my practice in ways that not only serve me and my purpose but also the community I aim to uplift.
As for advice, it’s tough because everyone’s journey is different. But I’d say this: find someone who inspires you, and let that inspiration push you to expand. Believe in the possibilities, love your vision, be clear with yourself, and hold on tight as you pursue it!

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Coming back to myself has been a journey. I was so focused on my business and practice that I lost sight of what truly excites me—what I value, where I want to live. So many decisions were made in the name of my practice, often without considering what I needed. This year, I’m learning to shift that focus inward, and like a river, life has started flowing again, and that – is fresh water for my practice, business, me and all the people around me.
