Meet Mariah Burgos

We recently connected with Mariah Burgos and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Mariah, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

Growing up I always had a passion for makeup! It was my creative outlet and a way to escape during my free time. I always had a thought to go to beauty school but I always thought “Eh that’s not good enough I need to do pursue something else”. Once I went to a college university I realized early on it wasn’t the right fit for me and I felt very out of place. I originally went to college for Criminal Justice and Child Psychology, subjects that intrigued me. However, as I began taking classes for it, I felt more like a chore than a passion. I wanted to love my future career. It wasn’t until my final semester of my first year of college that I wanted to finally pursue my true passion for beauty. I decided to just ride it out and finish my semester strong, passing every class, I then took a leap of faith to enroll in Cosmetology School at The Salon Professional Academy for the Esthetics program. Throughout beauty school I finally felt that I found my place and found my purpose. I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders and I knew one day success was within my reach. My goal now is to empower and serve others, helping women feel confident and beautiful in their own unique way.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am I Licensed Esthetician located in Melbourne, Florida and I focus on lash extensions, brows, makeup, and spray tans. I’m mainly working behind the chair doing lashes about 5 days a week as it is my #1 booked service. I also do brow services such as brow laminations, brow tints, and brow waxing. On the weekends I typically have weddings and I do makeup for a team called Glam Culture. I’m a booth renter at this salon and I have my own little cozy suite. While I’ve always considered makeup my first passion, I think lashes are quickly climbing to the top of my list. During beauty school, when we began our lash course, I thought to myself, “This is going to be a breeze.” Oh, how I was mistaken! I vividly remember the first time I attempted to apply a lash on my mannequin head, I felt like crying. It was incredibly challenging! I felt discouraged because I had always wanted to master lash extensions and when the moment finally arrived, it proved to be far more difficult than I had anticipated. Initially, I questioned whether this was the right path for me. However, my struggles fueled my determination to excel. I challenged myself to improve my skills, dedicating countless hours to practice, watching YouTube tutorials, and practiced on my mom. Gradually, I started applying lashes on friends and family, gaining valuable experience and learned a lot. Fast forward to today, and I’ve made significant progress! I’ve mastered my lashing skills, mapping clients eyes, different styles of lashes such as mega volume and wispy lashes. I invested in my first online lash course since beauty school with Light Heart Lash in December of 2023 and I’m thrilled to share that in February of 2024 Light Heart Lash launched their own lash line created to help lash artists jobs become easier and they picked me to be one of their brand ambassadors! I am extremely grateful for this amazing opportunity to be an ambassador for such an amazing heartfelt brand that cares so much about other artists and clients around the world. I hope someday I can teach more of the Light Heart education to other lash artists.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey, I realize that determination, ambition, and patience have been key to reaching where I am today. My advice for those just starting out is to take a leap of faith and follow what feels right for you. One thing I’ve always wanted to avoid is regret. Additionally, I encourage you to practice patience with yourself. It often takes about a year to build a consistent clientele and establish your name in the industry. This was something I struggled to accept; after graduation, I wanted to be booked and busy like everyone else, but that simply wasn’t the reality. The truth is, you must work hard for what you desire, and the effort you put in will reflect in your results. Having big ambitions is crucial in this industry. There will be moments when it feels discouraging, but don’t allow that to deter you. Keep pushing forward. Your hard work and determination will ultimately pay off in the end.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

The one person in my life who has played a pivotal role in my journey to where I am today is my fiance, Anthony. Not only did he believe in me he invested into me and my big dreams. When I was at the brink of dropping out of college, feeling overwhelmed and anxious about my uncertain future. He knew my passion for beauty and encouraged me to take the risk to pursue it. He has continuously been there for me and my business from helping me with business plans and ideas, to helping me make lash shampoo for my clients, he is one of my number one supporters. I also want to extend my gratitude to my parents for supporting me throughout this journey, and to the owner of Glam Culture, Crystal. She has also helped me get me where I am today and has been an amazing mentor and has contributed to my growth. I am immensely grateful for all my loving and loyal clients and friends who have witnessed my journey from day one. I would not be where I am today without each of you. Lastly, I would like to thank God for this amazing journey. His guidance and support have been important in helping me and my business succeed. I am truly thankful for the blessings that have come my way and I can’t wait to see what else He has in store for me!
