We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mariah Phillips-Savory. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mariah below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Mariah with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I started working at a very young age, while still in high school. My first job was working for my mom at a Sunglass store. All of my free time was spent there working. After school, weekends. When my friends were spending all their free time being teenagers and doing teenager things, spending time with friends, going to parties, I was working. I will admit at that time, early on, I resented my mom a little. Aside from going to school, how could she expect me to work all of my free time. At the time it didn’t make sense to me, and it certainly didn’t seem fair. Well, as time went on, being resentful turned into gratitude. I learned that to be successful sometimes that means making sacrifices, even at a very young age. I took what I learned and applied that to every job I had throughout the years. I was able to excel at everything I did and anything that was thrown my way. After many years of working in the corporate world, I was able to successfully start my own business, something that had been a dream of mine for many years. It finally came to fruition, and I couldn’t be happier. Looking back working all of those days, and sometimes very long hours taught me about priorities, and many other things about running a business. Yes, I worked hard to get to where I am, but I owe a huge part of my success to my mom. She instilled those values in me at a very young age and that taught me some incredibly valuable lessons along the way.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Determination – one of my favorite quotes, A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, tears, determination and hard work.
Adaptability – Being flexible and open to change allows you to adjust to new situations and challenges and overcome obstacles.
Communication is key – Clear and concise communication is essential for conveying ideas, building relationships, and leading teams effectively.
Never give up on your dreams. It may take you falling down a few times and having to get back up, but if you keep at it and work hard, those dreams will eventually become a reality. Don’t let anyone ever stand in your way or tell you, you can’t, because you can!
Being adaptable means, you can respond quickly to changing ideas, expectations, trends, strategies, and other processes. This is a key component to being successful. Something I learned very early on in my career.
Remember, good communication can help improve employee satisfaction and engagement. It can also help build trust and respect between coworkers and in the workplace.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I am feeling overwhelmed, I will step away for a bit, recollect my thoughts and get back at it.
Whether it means going for a walk or doing something more vigorous to clear your head, finding a quiet, private, and dimly lit space to give your senses a break. Setting boundaries, avoid taking on too much work.
Lastly, don’t be hard on yourself if you feel overwhelmed. We have all been there.
