Meet Marienda Gates

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marienda Gates. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marienda below.

Hi Marienda, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I developed my confidence and self-esteem by first having an in depth conversation with my mother as a teen. She always told me that I was beautiful and that my features were unique and that many people (models) pay to have the full lips I was born with. I grew up being very insecure in my pre-teen years because of verbal abuse I received from my older sibling about my features.

What also contributed to me becoming confident and possessing self-esteem was when I rededicated my life to Christ and I was so happy to read a particular scripture which is Psalm 139:14. Which states of how we’re fearfully and wonderfully made.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

One area of knowledge came from my amazing mother. As a teen she stated a quote that has stuck with me my entire life. “The first rules of life is self preservation.” Meaning to protect myself at all costs and to know my worth. Don’t settle for less that what I’m worthy to have, which is the absolute best.

A skill that I possess that I feel is important is to have an ear to be an attentive listener. This skill has helped me in my role as an effective parent, wife, pastor, life coach, counselor and as a sister and friend to many.

The advice I can share about being an effective listener is to ask questions relevant to what the speaker just said and use clarifying questions to make sure you fully understand their points. You can ask about additional information or pose open-ended questions to allow them to elaborate on their message.

Another area of knowledge is to be authentic in everything you do. This comes with having your own personal identity. (Revealed in Christ) When you’re authentic you stand out and you’re not a carbon copy of anyone else. You are not walking in the shadow of someone else. This is how you obtain confidence, boldness and self-esteem. Words won’t affect you. Opinions won’t deter you from doing what you are called to do. You have clear vision and excited for what’s about to manifest in your life.
