Mariett, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

I find inspiration from the vibrant and diverse environment of New York City. Being immersed in the city’s unique atmosphere, attending exhibitions, cultural events, and museums, as well as tuning into radio and music, all play a crucial role in keeping my creativity alive. Despite the overwhelming stimulation at times, I channel all these influences into my art, allowing them to manifest in organic and colorful ways on my canvases. It’s fascinating how I draw inspiration from everyday experiences and translates them into my creative work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’ve had an incredible artistic journey with various experiences that have shaped my creative path. From my adventures in Paris, passion for photography in NYC, exploration of art in Madrid, and the transformative experience in Mexico City, each chapter has contributed to my growth as an artist. It’s inspiring to hear how I found solace and self-expression through painting during challenging times, utilizing my art as a form of therapy and self-discovery.

Attending The Students Art League of New York and immersing myself in classes surrounded by fellow artists seems to have been a pivotal moment in reclaiming my self-confidence and identity as an artist. My ability to express my emotions and experiences through my canvases is a powerful way of connecting with others and creating meaningful art.

Navigating the art world can indeed be a demanding yet rewarding journey, and it’s commendable that I’ve pursued opportunities for professional development and growth, such as the Career Development program for Professional Artists in The Students Art League of New York by the known artist Marc Dennis. Engaging with fellow artists, gallery owners, and collectors can offer valuable insights and open doors to new possibilities in my artistic career.

It’s exciting to hear that there are new projects on the horizon, and I’m sure my dedication and passion will continue to shine through in my future endeavors. Embracing the long-distance nature of the artistic pursuit can be challenging, but as I’ve discovered, patience and perseverance bring their own rewards along the way.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Oh, how hard to choose only 3, I have gained invaluable insights and perspectives through my experiences living in different countries and immersing myself in diverse cultures. This has equipped me with a unique set of qualities, skills, and knowledge that shape my approach to life and work. Here are the key qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge I highlighted:

 

1. My exposure to different cultures has sharpened my ability to adapt and understand various perspectives, fostering empathy and deeper connections with others.

 

2. Valuing respect and honing my listening skills have been crucial in fostering meaningful communication and building strong relationships. Active listening has been instrumental in my growth and learning.

 

3. Observing people and incorporating psychological insights into conversations have enhanced my communication effectiveness and tailored interactions for better understanding.

 

4. Embracing humility and patience has grounded me, fostering self-awareness and openness to new opportunities for personal growth and development.

 

5. Prioritizing focus and commitment towards personal and professional goals underscores the importance of dedication and investment in pursuits that truly matter.

 

6. Surrounding myself with supportive individuals, engaging in cultural enrichment activities, and minimizing distractions like excessive social media usage illustrate my commitment to continuous learning and self-improvement.

 

These qualities, skills, and knowledge areas shape my approach to life and work, emphasizing meaningful connections, understanding, and a mindful pursuit of passions. Prioritizing self-awareness, learning, and a supportive environment are key components of my personal and professional growth.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

1. My mother, being an artist herself, has always been a pillar of support, motivation, and encouragement throughout my artistic endeavors. Her influence not only inspired me to pursue my passions but also instilled a deep sense of confidence in my creative pursuits.

 

2. My husband’s unwavering support and willingness to challenge me in uncomfortable situations have been vital for my growth. Learning from him and admiring his qualities have been a privilege, emphasizing the importance of having a supportive partner who encourages me to push boundaries and strive for progress.

 

3. The late Professor Mariano del Rosario from the Art League had a profound impact on my artistic journey. His constructive criticism and guidance pushed me out of my comfort zone, transforming my approach to artistic expression and propelling me to new creative heights.

 

These individuals have not only guided me through challenges but also helped me refine my skills, develop essential qualities, and expand my knowledge. Their contributions have shaped my path, encouraging me to embrace feedback for personal growth along my artistic endeavors. Recognizing and appreciating their influence has been truly enlightening on my journey towards success and self-discovery.
