Meet Marifer Gomez

We were lucky to catch up with Marifer Gomez recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Marifer , thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.

I overcome creativity blocks when I realized that I was getting them because I was thinking about what other people want to buy instead what I wanted to make. I’ll usually have ideas in my head, but I’ll start to doubt my self and focus on what’s currently selling/trending. It does work sometimes, but more often than not when I finally make whats been on my mind I not only receive positive feedback but my mind opens up and the next idea can pop in and I can see all the inspiration around me again. Sometimes I can get a creative block by having too many ideas and not knowing where to start. When that does happen, I write them down and begin drawing. The first piece I draw is often what I start with.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

FER is not only what my spanish speaking family calls me but the name I chose for my crochet brand. I started to crochet during the pandemic, learning first as a kid by my grandma then expanding my knowledge through youtube. I started with a star top and since then I have made everything from clothing, flower bouquets, and home decor.

I have recently focused more on making custom clothing because not only do I love collaborating with others but I get to make someones vision come true and it will hopefully last them a long time. The reason I got into fashion design was because I was sick of going to the mall and seeing the same clothing everywhere. I had ideas and I didn’t know how to make them come to life, and now I get to do that for others and myself.

In-between custom orders I also release small collections for every season. I only make a handful of pieces because crocheting takes time and it makes every piece you get from me that much special because it’s most likely the only one of its kind I made.

I have been slowly growing my business thanks to the knowledge and advice of other business owners I’ve met along the way and my own experiences. I hope I can also pass along the knowledge to others and continue to expand my knowledge of design and crochet.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Throughout my journey Ive learned a lot through networking. It sounds intimidating but its really just talking to others and exchanging tips. I’m a shy person myself but the more events I worked the easier it was to start conversations with other creatives. Ive been lucky to meet some amazing people with a lot of experience and knowledge.

Although I went to school for fashion design for a very short amount of time I was able to learn the very basics of design which helped me immensely when I started to crochet clothing.

The best advice I can give someone starting their creative journey is to be patient and don’t be afraid of slow growth because its whats going to give you longevity in the industry.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am always open for the opportunity to collaborate with others especially with photographers or other designers. I would love to specifically work with a leather crafter or furniture maker and create beautiful furniture
