Meet Marigail

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marigail a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Marigail, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

I was talking to a bandmate of mine from one of my many projects just a couple of weeks ago about optimism. I almost sounded too insane to myself. The co-subject included naivety, and how I think the two – optimism, and naivety – go hand in hand. Having a more realistic approach to life, they were trying to dial back my big-picture plan for all of this: the music. I’ve been doing a lot of soul-searching this year. Trying to delve deep into not just what I’m doing… but why? Why does it matter that I’m out here, making silly tunes in such a competitive market? Why do I care so much? Where is it going to take me in 30 years? Say, when I do make it, what’s at the finish line for a fiercely independent person who puts their art first and has no desire or plans to settle down into what society deems the perfect life (house, spouse, children)? I began to realize: it goes further than any selfish desire I could possibly have for those things. I want to make it to the top in order to help the college-dropouts scammed by our education system, and to help more than just the children I could have, who were scammed out of a loving home. That way, these people can have a chance at their art and dreams instead of just merely surviving in this growingly competitive, expensive, and selfish world. Seems a little ambitious, right?

To bring it back – I feel like there is such a thing as non-toxic and purposeful naivety. If you need to tell yourself everyday that your dreams are possible, no matter where they lay on the scale of hopelessness, and those words light a fire in you to work towards them everyday, then I opt to think that’s perfectly healthy. However, a lot of – especially jaded people – would probably find you pretty naive. It’s easy to underestimate the power of manifestation, even that of which takes place within our own thoughts. It begs the questions… are you naive if you choose to be optimistic? Or, are you optimistic to the point where cynical people think you’re near crazy? I’m purposefully naive because it protects me from negative manifestations, and that’s where my optimism comes from every single day. Every moment would be a stretch, but, whenever I get discouraged, coming back to look at the big picture truly helps.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a music producer and vocalist for many upcoming projects, the most renowned one at this time being, the band, Painters Club. The exciting aspect of working for this dream would definitely have to be how new everything is, every day. You wake up never truly knowing what amazing, new piece of creativity will flutter its way into a session, a practice, even solo reflection. Inspiration is everywhere, especially when you put yourself in the room with other musicians. Not to mention, you’re learning something new everyday, as well. My self-titled solo project, Marigail, is in the works as we speak. Painters Club is looking forward to soon recording our new EP and getting it out there for all the fans who’ve been asking. Other upcoming projects you will find me in include a rock-funk & R&B band (name non-disclosed yet), a girl duet group called The Postinas, a cinematic pop-marvel project: Dito Delirium, and a more intimate look into my life with the help of the artist, kame, in an R&B dynamic called Jumping Hollywood. My ghostwriting is making way into the scene, too, and I’m very excited to reveal the songs I’ve had the pleasure to be a part of… when they’re released, of course!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Intuition: who are you working with? This aspect doesn’t come right away, and there’s a huge learning curve that is absolutely necessary when building your network. And please acknowledge that the music game is a long game. Listening to your intuition when it comes to bandmates and other session artists will lead you into the right direction of what to avoid or steer into.
2. Networking: how are you working with others? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: networking, networking, networking! You can never go wrong when it comes to building a reputation, even outside your scene – especially in Houston. You see metal-heads helping the pop girlies all the time; the alternatives throwing a net out to those who specialize in electronic music. You’d be surprised.
3. Determination: do you work at your art everyday? Even just five minutes a day? Sometimes that’s all you can give – whether it be a busy family life, mental issues, a stuffy 9 to 5, or all of the above. It’s hard to get home after a long day of working for someone else and turning that energy inwards to work towards your own desires. I guarantee, though, five minutes is all it takes for inspiration to kick in and before you know it, it’s been nearly 2 hours just from purely getting lost in the vision.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I am always looking for people to collaborate with! Session musicians, bandmates, independent artists looking for someone to be your middle man to music, or brand new artists just starting out who might not even know what their first step is. I love mentoring and answering any questions I can. You can email me at marigailxmusic@gmail.com or better yet, direct message me on my Instagram @mr.marigail. I am even more particularly in search for those who specialize in music branding and networking, along with photographers/videographers. Each project I’m a part of will be getting to these stages in the music business soon.
