Meet Marilyn Chychota

We were lucky to catch up with Marilyn Chychota recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Marilyn with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I grew up in a small town in southern Alberta Canada. My parents were very hard workers who installed that in me. We had a farm and no matter my size ( I was small) or being a female my father would have me work on the farm. Growing up in the horse world, it’s daily hard work, and can be heavy work. There are no days off, no easy ways, no “I can do this later”. With animals , stables and farms it has to get done no matter the day, the weather or how you feel.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I have been involved in elite sport since I was 9 years old and my resume includes professional competition in three different sports: Triathlon, Cycling and Equestrian Show Jumping

I competed in equestrian show jumping up to a Grand Prix level. I started at age 9 and competed until I was 26 years old, where I had a competitive stable of my own as a professional trainer and rider.

I’ve been a triathlete since 1999. I became a professional triathlete in 2003, racing to podium positions at Ironman events around the world, including a victory at Ironman Malaysia in 2004. I’ve raced 15 professional Ironman events.

I have raced as a professional cyclist for over a decade. Beginning in 2000, I raced many national and world level races, including competing in the full USA and Australian National Road Circuit, Canadian Road and Time Trial Nationals, Australian Road and Time Trial Nationals, and the Women’s New Zealand Tour and World Cup. In addition to winning stage races, I won several state championships in both time trial and criterium racing.

I have also been a competitive amateur athlete in olympic weightlifting and powerlifting, winning a masters State Championship in powerlifting and competing at the masters World Cup in Olympic lifting. 2014-2017

I’ve lived, raced and trained throughout the world, including New Zealand, Australia, North America, Asia, South America and Europe.

I work with athletes all over the USA and globally. I am an experienced professional coach and an elite performance coach.

I believe in coaching each athlete specifically to their needs, their personal development, and to their specific goals.

I believe in quality coaching through science and the proven art of success. My athletes’ goals always come first. The athlete-coach relationship is a fundamental part of our success.

I believe in consistency over time towards reaching your goals. I want to support you to go further than you ever thought possible. My goal is not to sell you short cuts, but to provide quality that will get you results. I want to empower you through sport to be the best you can be in your life. I provide long term planning, dedicated coaching, and a commitment to making you better.

“Marilyn has built her coaching record through the tireless dedication she puts into every one of her athletes, bringing her lifetime of athletic achievement to help them achieve their goals. She has a rare combination of elite experience, coaching versatility, and commitment to her people.”

With my team we share our knowledge, our fears, our success and our failures. We support each other, we keep each other accountable and we push each other. I respect each member of my team for their strengths. I give them the platform to showcase their strengths and share their knowledge, passion and experiences to elevate everyone on the team. We each play an important role. Myself as the leader must always demonstrate by sharing my struggles, knowledge, fears, goals and lead by example. They need to see me succeed and lead fearlessly, but they also know I will show them when it’s difficult, scary or hard for me. We band together and lift together when we are strong and when we are weak. With this we know we are always moving forward through our journeys and towards our goals.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

A willingness to learn from the best. Put yourself in an environment where people are succeeding at what you want to do. Find those people and become their student. Be humble, listen, learn and ask a lot of questions. Follow what they do. Putting yourself in environments and with people who are doing what you want to be successful at well is key. Be open minded to think differently and push your limits on what you think you can do.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I like to connect with other coaches. Not just coaches in my arena, but coaches of all sports, teachers, leaders, life and many other areas. Being a leader and a coach you want to collaborate to inspire new ways of thinking, how you might handle complicated situations better and spark your own creative mind to develop new ideas and methods.
