We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marilyn Nguyen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marilyn below.

Marilyn, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

My optimism comes from my passion for capturing the unique beauty in every individual I photograph. Seeing the confidence that my portraits bring to people inspires me and keeps me positive. Additionally, the challenges and creative opportunities in photography push me to always look for the best in every situation.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My name is Marilyn, and I’m a portrait, event, and music photographer. My biggest passion is curating conceptual photoshoots and collaborating with other creatives. I love blending art and emotion, and I find joy in every step of the process! I also specialize in photo editing and manipulation using Adobe Photoshop, allowing me to add a unique touch to my photographs.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge in my journey were creativity, technical proficiency, and networking.

Creativity: Being able to think outside the box and approach photography with a unique perspective has been crucial. To develop this, I recommend experimenting with different styles and techniques, and drawing inspiration from various art forms.

Patience: Developing a keen eye for photography takes time and practice. There are instances when it takes a while for me to settle on an edit that I truly like. Allowing myself the time and patience to refine my skills, and accepting that I might not get it right the first time, has been crucial to my journey.

Networking: Building relationships within the photography community and with clients has opened many doors for me. For those early in their journey, I suggest attending industry events, joining photography groups or online communities, and collaborating with other creatives to expand your network.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

A particular challenge I am currently facing is balancing and prioritizing time for my creative projects. It’s easy to get consumed by client work, leaving little time for personal endeavors. However, whenever I do carve out time for my own projects, I feel immensely fulfilled. This reminds me of the importance of nurturing my creative passions alongside my professional commitments.
