Meet Marilyn Roos

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marilyn Roos. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with marilyn below.

Marilyn, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

i feel from an early age my parents instilled confidence in me by encouraging me to be genuine and true to myself. with that boost, i developed self-esteem because i was able to be independent even if i was occasionally a non conformist.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

my father was a lawyer by trade but was also a professional-caliber photographer with a beautiful eye and incredible technical skills. he gave me my first camera when i was eleven, a minolta. from then on, i was always taking photos, mostly of people. i lost my father when i was sixteen but i feel like his photography skills were implanted in me and it made me feel close to him and that i could continue this legacy. i pursued a career as a childrenswear designer after college for ten years and then had four children of my own. because i was always the one taking photos, while my kids were in pre school, i was put up for auction to take family portraits to raise money for the school by a friend. a few families got into a bidding war and i acquiesced by taking all of their family portraits. all families were happy with the results and started to spread the word of my skills, i raised money for the school and from there my business was launched. marilyn roos photography was rooted in word of mouth as a grassroots endeavor. now, twenty-five years later, it is a thriving business specializing in weddings, portraits, bar/bat mitzvahs, events and corporate photography.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1) determination to make my father proud and to prove to myself that i could run a successful business in making my passion become a career
2) people skills so that i could work with my clients in a variety of settings and circumstances and ease people’s minds if they were insecure about being captured on camera
3) flexibility to adapt to different situations and personalities presented in the job

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

my biggest area of growth in the past year is the wedding business. i have a loyal client base and as they and their children get older, i am capturing them at different phases and milestones. now many of my families are hiring me for their children’s weddings which i am honored to photograph.
