We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marion DuBose a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marion, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Honestly, it was the freedom of being able to follow my passion and perform songs that I love to play. Being a music writer and musician is something I truly enjoy and I wanted to pursue music business to the fullest to work for myself, not for a Fortune 500 company with no intention of growth.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Houston-born and raised musician, Marion DuBose is a classically trained violinist who transitioned into the Hip Hop, R&B, and jazz sector with his famous electric violin. Marion’s musical background began when he was a little kid with his older sister, Marea Franklin, who introduced him to the art of violin and then took off from there.
Marion plays all genres of music and makes original sounds with the electric and acoustic violins. Marion plays at all events and studios around the world. He’s currently 25 years old and has been playing the violin for 14 years now. He took up the electric violin in high school and made his own music and covers after learning the basics from his sister.
Marion creates “easy listening” music for the average listener to be able to study and work to. His goal is to bring out the productive side of people through his musical vision and build an innovative culture of sounds through violin, piano, and many other key instruments. Marion loves to make people smile with his music and wants to change the world in a positive way through this passion!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Impactful qualities that motivated me to grow were tenacity, resourcefulness, and the constant drive. The thing that separates me from other musicians is that I play ALL genres of music and I keep pushing to improve. I play from the heart and every note means everything to me.
When I was a kid in high school, I always was alone and was more to myself. I was raised basically as an only child since my siblings were 15 years older than me and out of the house by the time I started growing up. Personally, I never found happiness in school and in my personal life. This is what led me to open my mind more with music and playing the violin.
For people just getting started on their journey, keep going. Never stop your creativity and inspiration. People are always going to tell you that you’re not going to go far with your passion or you are not good enough. Let all of that go and just focus on what makes you work.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I would say “writer’s block” and content creation. I like to do things for myself, but making content to please others is a challenge for me.
