We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marisol Brescia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marisol , we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
Growing up, I saw my mother’s sacrifice in all she did. She was a single mother of 3 and did everything possible for us without any help except from one another. I realized that she went to bed hungry at times just to make sure my brother, sister, and I had enough to eat without going to bed hungry. She made sure she donated clothes, food, and her time to others that were worse off than us. I realized my mother had a heart of gold and I wanted to be kind and help those in need just like she did for myself and everyone around us. because my mother was such a huge inspiration, I volunteered for my community and the hospital. I also went on to help globally as a leader in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, providing medical services and medication. These are experiences that were completely rewarding, but helping others was also instilled in my upbringing.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a Doctorally prepared Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. I am the owner and founder of Brescia Brain Management & Wellness, mental health services. In this role, I do psychiatric evaluations, prescribe and manage medications, and provide therapy for those with mood disorders, and ADHD. I provide virtual services on Friday- Sunday. I feel helping those that need a helping hand, someone to actively listen to people who want to express their feelings without being judged, and providing proper support is what makes my job so rewarding.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Motivation, determination, and drive were the most impactful qualities in my journey. I feel that dreams can truly come true if you want it bad enough! I was always strong willed and never let an obstacle be the reason for a set back. Instead, failure drove me to be successful. I wanted to prove to myself that i’m stronger than I thought. That I’m resilient! I always thought, “if I want to be a part of the solution in helping those people with mental illness, I could not give up and fail my community! For those just starting their journey, I would advise them to follow their instincts and do what makes them happy even if it is difficult or if the journey is long. Everything great, is worth fighting for!
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Feeling overwhelmed is difficult to prevent completely. Managing stressors effectively help decrease negative feelings for sure. When I’m feeling completely overwhelmed, I make sure I take time for myself such as talking to my best friend, practice box breathing, and participating in mindful movement such as attending a yoga class. Not only am I making time for myself, but I’m helping my body recover and signaling the nervous system to stay calm.
