Meet Marisol Leach

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marisol Leach. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Marisol, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I often find that when I’m purposely trying to come up with creative ideas and solutions for a cake project, nothing happens. It’s when my mind is blank with no expectations that my creative ideas are flowing most freely. A lot of times when I’m watching a new show or a movie, I can picture how I could make it into a cake. I love themed cakes! I recently saw the Pixar movie Elemental, and I was just inspired and I envisioned what it could look like as a cake. Inspiration is everywhere! Let it come to you.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I specialize in themed custom cakes and cupcakes. I emphasize themed because those are the more fun for me to do. Yes, I can do a simple, naked cake with flowers and a wood topper, but it would spark excitement in me to do a wedding cake for a couple that’s obsessed with Lord of the Rings or something. What can I say? I love nerds.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One thing I know about myself: I’m a fast learner. Part of the reason for that is my tendency to fully engross myself with a subject. I will watch all the videos, read blog posts and interviews, and spend countless hours practicing. I’m a determined person, and a bit of a perfectionist. I’m always trying to improve and refine my skills and business.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
First and foremost, that it’s for someone who likes cake. It sounds silly, but I have gotten a surprising number of inquiries in which they specify it’s for someone who doesn’t like cake. Really takes the wind out of my sails. My favorite clients are those who give a detailed description of what they want. Whether it’s a paragraph explaining the design, Pinterest boards, or even a copy of the invitation for the event. Details are so important to me!
