Meet Marissa

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marissa. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Marissa , so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?

Well, running a homestead with my husband, being a mom of 4, homeschooling, and baking for our sourdough cottage bakery was becoming too much. I was baking more than I could handle, thinking that was the only way to grow our bakery – but it left me drained and disconnected from why I started baking in the first place. This past year, I’ve learned how important it is to balance my time, set realistic goals, and give myself the rest I need.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

What I enjoy most about what I do is baking sourdough bread. Knowing how nourishing and gut-healthy it is for my family and others makes me happy. It takes time and patience to make, but it’s always worth it- especially when I get to meet customers face to face and hear them say how much they love it. Sharing something made by hand that brings comfort, connection and health is truly the most rewarding part.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I’d say along the way I’ve developed stronger time management, patience and adaptability.

Sourdough itself has taught me patience. Some days don’t go as planned and I have to tell myself that’s okay. Giving yourself grace makes a huge difference. Learning to adapt helps with enjoying the process more. Plan your time, give yourself grace and stay flexible. Growth happens in the waiting.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

My husband and my faith in Jesus has been my rock throughout it all. My husband has encouraged me, pushed me when I needed it, and has reminded me of what I’m capable of. His support has made all the difference.
