Meet Marissa Herrman

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marissa Herrman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Marissa , so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?

I prioritize self care on a daily. Whether it’s caring for my chickens, or doing a yoga practice I do many things daily that bring me joy. I love being active and enjoy many hobbies, one of my favorites is snowboarding. I also love to cook for others and myself. There’s nothing I love more than a home cooked meal packed with herbs from my garden.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Im a digital and 35mm film photographer based in Fallbrook, ca. I’m born and raised in vista, ca. I spent the last 6 years working in the service industry, going to college full time in hopes of getting into nursing school. When I was applying there was this overwhelming feeling that it wasn’t the career for me. I was just starting to gain traction as a photographer on the side and made the big leap to pursue it full time and work side by side with Alex with his welding company. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. It’s scary AF, but now Alex and I have the freedom do really do anything we want with this life, and have very bug plans and goals for the future. I have a studio on our property where I love to do creative shoots. I have a fun event for phototag friends and models soon and have some western concepts in mind. Recently, I’ve been most excited about doing more weddings. I’ve booked more this year than ever and love the creative approach I take on weddings. They’re super colorful while emphasizing their wedding colors and vibes, I edit every collection a little differently. Not a huge fan of niches. I’m really big on providing 35mm prints, something that a client can hold + feel forever. Dont get me wrong, digital photography is great and all but there’s nothing more precious than a memory recorded in time on film. You can really feel the emotion within the image. I’ve also been experimenting with videos for fun, I think it’s something exciting I want to do more often in the future. The name MRH photo is just my initials, Marissa Ruth Herrman, I’m going to be married soon to the love of my life and wanted to keep my maiden name alive within my business. Family is everything to us. My favorite part about photography is meeting clients for the first time and breaking them out of their shell, it’s a form of therapy in my opinion. Confidence in front of a camera isn’t easy, and I love the my profession allows me to find that within every unique individual. Everyone’s bodies move differently and pose differently, finding everyone’s best poses is one of the most fun and challenging parts.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Now that I look back, I’ve always had a camera, pencil or paintbrush in my hand. Throughout childhood I was always creativity, it seems fitting to pursue a career and lifestyle where I’m creating on the daily. College was great, it really helped me become the person I am. I met many amazing people and professors that helped me shape my world view and outlook on life. My biggest piece of advice to anybody is to do the uncomfortable. Chase the impossible. It’s cliche but life is so short, and you deserve to do what makes you happy everyday. Never stop learning and pushing yourself. A little bit everyday goes a long way. It’s never too late to start your own business. You get to be your own boss and not take shit from anyone and that’s the best part.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

My biggest area of growth recently has been developing my style and connecting within the photography community. I’ve been hundreds of talented individuals, and it’s so inspiring being surrounded by them. I would describe my photos as non traditional, colorful, with a heavy mix of both candid and posed shots. A typical collection from me is filled with variety, colors and feelings. I’ve also been playing around with video. Edits have been something I’ve been doing since I was little, I had the first GoPro and very many after that. I thought it would be fun to tap into professional video. I also make reels for local small businesses.
