Meet Marjorie Silva

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marjorie Silva a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Marjorie, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

Being the only one in the room:
As a Black woman from Brazil living in the United States, I’ve often been the only person in the room who looks like me or shares my background. This has helped me become stronger and more comfortable with being different.

Adapting to new cultures:
Coming from Brazil, which is very diverse, I’ve learned to understand and fit into different cultures. Being the only Brazilian in the room allows me to share new ideas and perspectives that others might not have. It also helps me bring people together by showing them something different.

Strength as a Black woman:
As a Black woman, I’ve been in spaces where I didn’t see many people like me. This has taught me to be confident and to believe in myself. I’ve learned to speak up when needed and to focus on doing my job well, letting my work show my value.

Building connections:
Even though I might be the only one who looks like me, I always try to connect with others. I look for mentors, friends, and allies who support me. These relationships help me feel more included and make me feel like I belong.

Adding value to the group:
I’ve realized that being different is an advantage. I bring new ideas and perspectives that others might not think of, which helps the team come up with better solutions. My background and experiences make me a valuable part of any group.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

What I do:
I run a YouTube channel where I share my experiences of life in the USA. It all started when I became an au pair, and I wanted to help others who were thinking about joining the program by sharing tips, advice, and real-life stories. Over time, the channel has grown, and now I also talk about life after the au pair experience, cultural exchange, and what it’s like to live in the USA as an immigrant. I also enjoy doing travel vlogs, where I document my trips and share my experiences exploring new places.

What’s special about it:
What makes my channel exciting is that it’s not just about my own journey—it’s about helping others navigate the same path. I provide practical tips and share what I’ve learned about adapting to a new culture, making the most of a cultural exchange, and building a life in a new country. It’s like having a conversation with a friend who’s been through it all.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, three impactful skills or qualities in my journey:
First, my degree in graphic design has been really useful for video editing. It gave me the tools to create visually appealing and engaging content for my YouTube channel. Second, I’ve learned the importance of creativity—finding new ways to share my experiences and make the content interesting. Finally, consistency has been key. Regularly posting and staying committed to my channel has helped me grow my audience over time.

Advice for those starting their journey:
My biggest advice is simple: just do it. If you’re thinking about starting a channel, find something you’re passionate about, and start creating content without worrying about what others might think. It’s easy to get stuck overthinking, but the most important thing is to enjoy the process and have fun with it.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Looking for collaborations:
Yes, I’d love to collaborate with others on my YouTube channel, especially on topics about living in the USA. I’m open to working with an American, to share different perspectives on life here, or with someone from another country to discuss their experiences as an immigrant. I’m also excited to collaborate with people who enjoy traveling, so we can share different travel experiences and tips. Collaborating would allow us to explore cultural differences and similarities in a fun and insightful way.

If you’re interested in partnering up, feel free to reach out to me!
