We recently connected with Mark Coleman and have shared our conversation below.
Mark , so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
My self-discipline comes from a sense of necessity, driven by the urgency to accomplish tasks and the understanding that I must rely on my own efforts, leaving no room for excuses. Achieving growth and progress demands personal discipline, a journey filled with sacrifices—foregoing leisurely moments with friends and redirecting funds toward self-investment. It’s a commitment that transforms into a lifestyle, requiring continuous adjustments until reaching new levels of success.”
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
“As an entrepreneur and creator, I proudly navigate the realms of fashion, podcasting, and collaboration. My endeavors include the clothing brand ‘Free The Gods,’ ‘The More Than Sneakers Podcast,’ ‘The Sneaker Emporium,’ and a partnership with ‘The Good Life Candle Co’ for ‘Sneaker Candles.’ Drawing inspiration from hip-hop culture and the arts, I channel my creativity into various outlets. My distinctive style and choice of sneakers serve as a passport, opening doors to new connections and spaces. ‘Free the Gods’ embodies a message of mutual respect, recognizing the divine in each other. ‘The More Than Sneakers Podcast’ extends beyond sneaker culture, amplifying diverse conversations. ‘The Sneaker Emporium’ hosts a vibrant sneaker expo, providing a platform for local brands and artists to showcase, sell, and network. This space becomes a hub for creators, featuring interviews, photography, and fostering growth. Collaborating with ‘The Good Life Candle Co,’ we craft unique sneaker candles and mini melts, blending my passion for sneakers with their candle expertise. This is just the beginning of my journey, with many more creative ventures on the horizon.”
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. “I relentlessly reject ‘no’ as an answer.” 2. “I acquire self-sufficiency by learning to do things on my own.”
3. “I prioritize education through extensive reading, trial and error and surrounding myself with those who can inspire or impart knowledge.”
“In the pursuit of your path, resist detours—even if the biggest obstacle is yourself. When facing your lowest moments, push harder and foster self-belief. Consider the impact you aspire to make: Is your journey solely about personal goals, or do you aim to positively influence others through your passions”
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
“My significant area of growth lies in The Sneaker Emporium, especially in the recent event on Aug 6th. Having organized three prior ones, the last in 2019 pre-COVID, I identified aspects I loved and loathed, believing I could enhance the event experience. The latest edition, held at Hawthorne instead of gymnasiums, aimed for a distinct vibe and aesthetic. We elevated the experience by gifting attendees with curated boxes from local brands, offering artists free wall space, featuring a food truck (Cajun Seduction), and providing a bar with diverse beverage options. DJ Domo set the perfect vibes. A standout from the rebrand was ‘The Sneaker Emporium Year Book,’ capturing moments from the event and spotlighting vendors, artists, photographers, and videographers. While adjustments are still needed, this marks a crucial first step in the right direction.”
