We recently connected with Mark Ervin and have shared our conversation below.
Mark , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding my purpose has been a journey tied closely to my passion for sustainability, the environment, and agriculture. Early on, I saw the disconnect between conventional farming practices and the health of our soils and ecosystems, which inspired me to make a change. I realized my purpose was to create solutions that empower growers to work in harmony with nature rather than against it. At GreenGro, we’re committed to regenerative agriculture, giving growers products that are not only effective but also contribute to healthier soils and ecosystems for future generations. The sense of responsibility to be part of that change drives everything I do.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
At GreenGro Biologicals, I’m driven by a commitment to regenerative, sustainable growing. From the beginning, my vision has been to create products that nourish plants while building healthy, living soil ecosystems. Our goal is simple: bring ancient soil-nurturing techniques together with today’s microbiological science to empower growers at every level. This approach is about more than just feeding plants—it’s about creating soil that can support vibrant life on its own, reducing the reliance on synthetic inputs and giving people a way to grow in harmony with the environment.
What excites me most about GreenGro’s work is our ability to blend traditional and modern methods in ways that make plant care accessible, effective, and sustainable. All of our products are infused with beneficial microorganisms, helping customers cultivate a thriving, self-sustaining soil ecosystem. This living soil approach means less stress on the grower and a healthier outcome for the plants and planet.
We’re also thrilled to be rolling out several new products this year that reflect this mission. Our upcoming acid-loving plant fertilizer is designed for gardeners who grow species like azaleas or blueberries, while our indoor plant fertilizer offers something specifically tailored for houseplants. Additionally, we’re launching a few innovative washes to meet the needs of today’s conscious growers: Flower Shower is a natural rinse for harvested cannabis, and we’re adding both a veggie and fruit wash and an egg wash to help folks safely clean produce and eggs. These products represent our dedication to safe, effective solutions that fit into any gardener’s routine, whether they’re focused on sustainability, yield, or simply the joy of growing.
GreenGro’s approach is all about enabling people to grow naturally and effectively, bringing the soil to life and allowing plants to thrive.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities stand out as being especially impactful: curiosity, resilience, and the ability to adapt. These skills allowed me to navigate the ups and downs of building GreenGro Biologicals and continually refine our vision for sustainable soil health.
Curiosity has been a cornerstone for me. This drive to understand not just “what” works but “why” something works led me to explore both traditional soil practices and modern microbiology. For anyone early in their journey, I’d recommend diving into your field with a learner’s mindset. Read broadly, experiment, and don’t be afraid to question conventional wisdom—curiosity fuels innovation.
Resilience has also been critical. Starting any business involves setbacks, but the key is to keep moving forward and learning from every challenge. The plant care and soil health industry, especially, has its fair share of roadblocks, from navigating regulations to educating a market that’s still learning about regenerative practices. My advice to newcomers is to build resilience by setting clear goals and remembering why you started in the first place. Every setback has the potential to be a learning experience if you’re willing to see it that way.
The industry, like any other, is constantly evolving with new technology, climate challenges, and customer needs. Being able to adjust your approach, or even your core offerings, to meet these changes has been vital to GreenGro’s growth. For those just starting out, adaptability is something you can develop by staying connected with your community and industry trends. Remain open to change, and never be afraid to pivot when you see a better way forward.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who’s passionate about creating sustainable, thriving ecosystems, whether they’re an at-home gardener, a large-scale farmer, or a horticultural enthusiast. I look for clients who truly care about soil health and understand the value of nurturing the environment rather than just focusing on yield or aesthetics alone. These are people who recognize that healthy soil leads to healthier plants and that investing in long-term soil vitality ultimately benefits their crops, their community, and the planet.
An ideal client also has a curious and open mindset. They’re willing to try new approaches, explore different biological solutions, and learn about the science behind regenerative practices. They want to understand how our products work with nature, not against it, and are excited about the potential to reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.
Finally, I love working with clients who value collaboration. They’re not just looking for a product but a partnership. We’re here to support them with insights and advice to help them make the most of GreenGro’s solutions. When clients share their results, ask questions, and seek guidance, it not only strengthens their success but drives us to innovate and improve.
If you’re driven by a commitment to sustainability, eager to learn, and excited about creating a healthier future, then you’re exactly the kind of person we want to support.
