We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mark Gasparro. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mark below.
Mark , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Resilience, I believe, is cultivated through diverse life experiences and embracing challenges. From a young age, sports taught me discipline and the drive to excel. This foundation of striving to be the best was further tested when I moved from Ireland to the UK at thirteen, choosing to continue my education in Ireland despite the distance from my family. This decision fostered independence and a deep-seated confidence from a young age.
My journey didn’t stop there; living in the south of France, I adapted to a new culture and language, enriching my resilience. Nearly five years ago, I moved to the USA and started from scratch in the Atlanta real estate market. Each of these chapters didn’t just test my resilience—they enhanced it, reinforcing my belief that with determination and focus, any challenge can be transformed into an opportunity for growth.
In essence, life has taught me that resilience is not just about surviving but thriving through challenges, constantly learning and evolving.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a real estate specialist based in Metro Atlanta, I focus primarily on residential properties, connecting individuals and families with homes that fit their dreams and lifestyles. What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to make a significant impact on someone’s life by helping them find their ideal home. It’s not just about transactions; it’s about building communities and lasting relationships.
Beyond my professional endeavors, I am deeply passionate about animal welfare and community service. Although my recent commitments have kept me from participating actively with the Humane Society, my two rescue huskies keep me connected to my love for animals every day. I also dedicate time to support our local community through various initiatives. For instance, I have organized team participation in the Atlanta Food Bank, helping address food scarcity and supporting those in need.
I’m also excited about my recent involvement in our office’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee. This role offers a new avenue to foster an inclusive workplace and plan events that celebrate and promote diversity within our team and community.
These activities reflect my commitment not just to my profession but to making a positive difference wherever I can. Whether it’s finding someone the perfect home or contributing to societal well-being through volunteering, it’s about adding value and joy to people’s lives.
This blend of professional focus and community involvement defines who I am and what I stand for, and I’m thrilled to share this journey with others.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey so far, I can pinpoint three fundamental qualities that have profoundly influenced my path: self-belief, compassion, and an unending curiosity about life.
Self-belief has been a cornerstone of my success. Believing in myself, even when facing setbacks, has allowed me to push through challenges and pursue my goals relentlessly. This inner confidence is crucial, especially in real estate, where each day can bring new tests of your resolve and capabilities.
Compassion is another critical quality, not just in personal interactions but as a professional ethos. It has guided me to build more meaningful relationships and to approach each client’s needs with empathy and understanding. This quality transcends professional boundaries and enriches every community interaction, whether volunteering or working with diverse teams.
Curiosity about life and its myriad possibilities has kept me perpetually engaged and learning. This trait has spurred me to explore new cultures, adapt to various business environments, and continuously seek out new knowledge and skills. It keeps the journey exciting and personally enriching.
For those early in their journey, my advice is as follows:
Dream and follow your passion: Doing what you love will sustain you through challenges and enrich every victory.
Maintain humility but carry yourself with confidence: Knowing your worth while acknowledging you can always learn more makes you both approachable and respected.
Never stop learning: Education is a lifelong process, and every experience teaches us something new.
Travel and embrace diversity: Exposure to different cultures broadens your perspectives and enhances your adaptability and empathy.
Love and be loved: Personal fulfillment is as important as professional achievements.
Manage time and embrace every moment: Life is fleeting; value your time and live fully in each moment.
Stay positive amidst negativity: Don’t let external negativity deter you. Stay focused on your path and let your achievements speak for themselves.
Be financially savvy: Understanding and managing your finances is crucial for long-term security and freedom.
Embracing these principles has not only shaped a successful career but a fulfilling life, and I hope they can inspire others as they have inspired me.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
One book that has profoundly influenced my development is Susan Jeffers’ Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. I first encountered this inspiring work around 1987, and its principles have deeply resonated with me ever since.
Jeffers masterfully addresses the natural fear that arises when we face the unknown, teaching that fear should not deter us from action. Her approach, which involves stepping out of our comfort zones to confront these fears, has empowered me to grow stronger and more confident with each challenge.
Some of the most impactful wisdom I’ve gleaned from the book includes:
The Five Truths About Fear, which helped me understand that feeling fear is universal and acceptable when venturing into new territories.
The Chatterbox, Jeffers’ term for the negative, self-critical voice in our heads. Learning to replace this internal chatter with positive affirmations has shifted my mindset significantly.
The No-Lose Decision Model shifted my perspective on decision-making. Instead of seeing decisions as right or wrong,
I’ve learned to view them as opportunities for growth, with each choice bringing valuable lessons. These concepts have not only guided me through personal challenges but have also enhanced my professional resilience, encouraging a proactive and optimistic approach to both life and career. Jeffers’ book continues to be a cornerstone of my personal philosophy, urging me to act beyond fear towards a richer, more fulfilling life.
