Meet Mark Holland

We recently connected with Mark Holland and have shared our conversation below.

Mark, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I found my purpose by listening to my heart and doing what brings me joy. Not everything you do in life you’re going to want to do, but if you keep in mind that, when the time comes, you can do what you love and what fulfills you. For me, that is writing or performing music.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My specialty, working along with my twin brother Michael, is writing and producing music. Some of this takes the form of producing music for ourselves, and at other times we produce music for film or TV. We just spent the last four years working on music for the HBO show the Righteous Gemstones. That was a really rewarding experience and gave us a chance to showcase our abilities to make different kinds of music for different kinds of situations. Once that was all wrapped up, we decided to take this year and produce a full length album of our material. That has been an incredibly exciting experience and even more rewarding than working for HBO. It’s like having a baby and watching it grow. Our album is called “ Bon Vivant Savants” and will be streaming everywhere September 30.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Working in music production it really helps to have a deep knowledge of music history, instrumentation, and a good ear. The best thing you can do is not limit yourself to one style or genre. You can find bits of inspiration or an idea from just a snippet of any kind of music. It’s important to keep an open mind when listening and absorbing the sounds around you. Always be aware of the sounds that you hear, even the sounds of silence.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

The number one obstacle that we face as producers of music is finding enough time to accomplish our goals. We’ve really had to juggle work and family commitments around our production schedule many times. But many times when you are in a crunch, you produce your best work. The important thing is to stay calm and patient and to trust your instincts.
