Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mark Overstreet. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mark, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
It starts at an early age. As a person whether male or female you have to be comfortable with who you are as person. We are all programmed early in life with our weight, height and everything that represents you as a person. If people around, you are not confident you will not be confident. You have to be confident in the work you deliver and your sense of professionalism. No matter how adverse the external situations are. You can always have a sense of inner balance and tranquility. Make lists of your achievements, and things in your life that you are proud of. Acknowledge your personal strengths and talents and remind yourself of them often. Set realistic goals for yourself. I always wanted to be a leader and not someone who followed the path of least resistance in life. My personal self-confidence came from celebrating the small things in life, things I could change, stop trying to be perfect, stop judging my personal mistakes, being around positive people with positive energy, volunteering and exercising, My self-esteem comes from having a great mother- who always taught me to “STAND TALL”. she taught me how to practice gratitude, take note of negativity, challenging myself, being kind to strangers, meditation, acknowledge affirmations and remove yourself from negative people.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Born in Boston, MA moved to Oakland., CA and then overseas to Bamberg Germany. Raised by a middle-class family in the southeast primarily Georgia. My father served in War World II and the Vietnam War. A highly decorated War veteran for acts of valor. Unfortunately, at the age of 10 I lost my father to a major stroke. My mother born in Nice France and raised in Toyko Japan was my everything. She was very nurturing and caring. Above everything else she always made sure that my environment was one where I could thrive and grow. I was very fortunate that she attended to my physical, emotional and psychological needs ensuring that I was loved, valued and respected. I am proud and privileged to be the General Manager of Telemundo Minnesota. Our CEO Louis Wall is quoted- ” My hope is we can create a good place to be…. with really good people……doing really good things. Our overall goal is serving the community by collaborating with all our partners. Telemundo is proud to be serving the Minneapolis-Saint Paul market and to be part of the community. Our goal is to become an important contributor. We have a strong commitment to serve, inform and educate the Hispanic community, but we can never do it alone because we need local partners /organizations to build that bridge together. Telemundo’s name and brand comes with a built-in trust for the Hispanic community, and we want to assist our Partners to start and improve their relationship with this community.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three of the most important characteristics include being honest with yourself, being real and being willing to change. When you are honest with yourself you accept your weaknesses, strengths and flaws. Make choices that align with your core values. As you grow and mature you will learn what they are. You also learn what you are capable of doing and not doing. As you start to understand yourself people’s judgements about you become less important. Being real is critical- don’t worry about pleasing others or living by someone else’s standards and rules. Being true to yourself means take advantage of your best traits to find your true happiness. This is the toughest. of the three qualities-Behavior change- along your life’s journey you must engage in actions or series of actions that lead to a new desired outcome and includes you as an individual to make changes in your life.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Telemundo Minnesota is always looking for true corporate partnerships because we can never do it alone. We look for companies that have shared interest or efforts on community projects that can make a difference in the community in which we serve. We look to partnerships in the following categories: automotive, banking, Legal, Retail, Fortune 500 Companies, Insurance, education and tourism.
