We recently connected with Mark Wonderlin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mark , so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
I’ve always been a big advocate of self-care and personal health. When I was in High School, I was an athlete, so I was constantly in the gym, drinking protein shakes, and had a pot of hard-boiled eggs on the stove.
Today, I still go to the gym regularly, make good healthy choices, take supplements, drink lots of water, take vitamins, track my sleep, and do short meditations daily, and I’m always looking for the next thing to add to my daily health routine.
That combination of things really helps set my day and gives me the energy and mindset to take on the daily challenges of owning a business and being a single parent.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I own a video production company in Austin, and we specialize in creating high-converting marketing content for businesses and brands.
I’ve been in the industry for 12 years, and what’s exciting for me and my staff is working with an array of diverse businesses and seeing the impact our videos make on their company. One day, we’re filming a brand story video for a franchise pool company and editing a video for a real estate builder. Then, the next day, we’re on a shoot with a Solar company while the editing team is putting together an animation video for a client a new tech start-up.
We just started our organic social campaign on six different sites where we’re sharing some of the projects, giving people a look behind the scenes at shoots, and posting lots of educational content with me, sharing some video and marketing advice.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most important things I discovered is: Marketing, Sales, & Management. When I first started, I was just getting referrals and relationship-based projects. This is great because there isn’t marketing spend, and the sale is easier because they are coming to me from a refferal or they already knew me.
However, as I grew the business, I needed to market to people who never heard of me, and building trust and credibility from the sales side was much harder. And as I grew and built a team, managing them and having a clear vision for the future was incredibly important.
The best advice I can give is INVEST IN YOURSELF. I know a lot of people say that, but it’s true. Learning more about sales, marketing, and leadership is going to help tremendously. Even if you hate this stuff, you’ll at least have the knowledge to ask the right questions when hiring either an employee or a contractor.
How would you describe your ideal client?
Our ideal client is a business generating over 2 million in annual revenue. They typically have a small marketing team, a budget in place, and are looking to enhance their marketing conversion from video.
They already understand the incredible conversion power of video, they value their brand so they don’t want to take the risk working with a lower-priced and lower-quality production person or team. They have marketing channels and testing metrics in place and understand that the way you structure, produce, and market video will determine success.
They actively want to collaborate with us on creative ways to use video in their funnels and marketing to connect with their clients and increase sales conversion.
