Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Markesha Thomas AKA @piyo.keesh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Markesha Thomas, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I overcame imposter syndrome by being still. Did I choose to be still, no, it was out of my control, but necessary for growth. During my moment of stillness, I reflected on what got me into practicing yoga, Pilates, and why I thought sharing the practice with others would be beneficial. After creating my Brag Folder, I realized that since 2013 I have offered free classes at parks and online, hosted Family & Friends PiYo, have volunteered with teens, partnered and collaborated with various social and fitness businesses, hosted a vendors market sold videos, but most importantly, I have been a safe space that has allowed each individual I have interacted with to be seen and felt on a deeper energetic level.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I teach clients ways to be centered, balanced, strong, more confident, and accomplished through intentional movement, hand-on Pilates + Yoga, assistance, and breathwork. When training private clients, I create ecology for functional fitness and encourage safe, explorative self-expression. When training groups of 7 or more, I create a safe space that allows for energy in motion to ebb and flow while ensuring you get a full body workout! Any physical program is a personal one, so it’s an honor to be a vessel who teaches other melanated people ways to learn more about their body past the physical.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most impactful aspects of this entreprenuer journey for me have been the following:
1. Discipline – Do the things and do them consistently; What would future you be doing right now? Do that with no excuses.
2. Creativity – Unlock that right brain using arts & crafts, colorful and intellectual games, using your non-dominant hand for your daily activities such as brushing your teeth
3. Kinesiology – Your body is truly your first home if you think about it deeper, so we must protect it’s “soothing feel”; keep it clean, functional, remove/rennovate if needed, and make sure the matience is frequent and up to date.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is a 30-70 years young, early riser to bask in gratitude, and craves to begin her day with the necessities she knows will improve the quality of her life. She may be a corporate worker or a night life twerker, and she wants to improve the grace and ease in which she performs her craft(s). She may be an inactive athlete or live a sedentary lifestyle, but wants a routine that fits the body she has now while working on the body she wants. Her goals are to LOOK and FEEL improvement, and she understands her journey may not look like anyone’s. She may or may not have seen or heard about Pilates and Yoga, but is willing to put herself first to experience it in a modernized form.
