Meet Marla Blake

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marla Blake. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marla below.

Hi Marla, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

“Being the only one in the room” has never stopped me—if anything, it’s pushed me to rise higher. Since I was a child, my mom would remind me how persistent I was. That spirit never left me. I’ve learned to embrace challenges, even when they’re hard, and to always stay grounded in who I am.

I choose every day to be authentically myself, because no one else can be me. And I don’t want to blend in—I was made to stand out. As a woman of faith, I believe the light of God shines through me. I carry that light into every room I walk into, letting His presence and the gifts He placed in me speak for themselves.

So even when I’m the only one in the room who looks like me, I walk with confidence, humility, and purpose. Each day, I thank God for making me me—and then I go be great.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My journey has been one of faith, perseverance, and purpose. As a single mom, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges—but those challenges shaped me into the woman I am today. They gave me a heart for helping others, especially other single moms who are working hard to create a better life for their families. That’s what inspired both my work in real estate and my nonprofit.

Professionally, I’m a real estate agent in the Upstate of South Carolina, and I’ve found so much fulfillment in helping people—especially women like me—find a place to call home. I believe homeownership is a key to building generational wealth, and I take pride in walking alongside my clients, guiding them through one of the biggest decisions of their lives with care, honesty, and compassion.

I’m also passionate about personal growth and faith-based encouragement. Whether it’s through my nonprofit work or simply sharing a word of inspiration, I want people to feel seen, valued, and empowered. Right now, I’m focused on expanding my reach—both in real estate and ministry—so I can continue to be a light in someone’s journey and remind them that with God, all things are truly possible.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, three qualities have truly shaped my journey: compassion, gratitude, and ambition.

Compassion has allowed me to connect with people on a deeper level. I lead with empathy. When you understand someone’s story, you serve them better.

Gratitude has kept me grounded. No matter how big or small the win, I’ve learned to pause and thank God for how far I’ve come. That mindset keeps your heart soft and your perspective strong, even in tough seasons.

Ambition is the fire that keeps me going. I’ve always had a drive to do more—not just for myself, but for my children, my clients, and the people I’m called to serve. I believe if God gave you a vision, He also gave you the strength to chase it.

For anyone just starting out, my biggest advice is: remember why you started. There will be moments when things feel overwhelming or unclear—but when you hold on to your “why,” it becomes your anchor. Keep showing up. Stay humble, stay hungry, and never stop growing.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes, absolutely—I’m always open to collaboration, especially when it aligns with my heart and purpose.

I’m looking to partner with nonprofit organizations or groups focused on homeownership, financial assistance, and community development—especially those that support single mothers and families who are working hard to create a better future. Whether it’s through joint programs, educational resources, or events, I believe we can do more when we come together.

I’m also seeking to connect with investors, developers, and builders who are passionate about creating affordable, quality housing and who share a vision for uplifting underserved communities. If you believe in building not just homes but hope, we’re already on the same page.

And overall, I welcome collaboration with anyone who sees the same vision I do—empowering others, creating generational wealth, and shining light in the lives of those who need it most.

If you’re reading this and feel aligned, I’d love to hear from you. You can connect with me through my website, social media, or directly by email. Let’s build something impactful together.
