Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marley Angel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marley , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Keeping my creativity alive comes naturally when I allow myself to explore every idea, no matter the outcome. As a musician working in folk, chamber pop, and electronic music, and as a graphic designer and painter, I’m always finding new ways to express myself across different mediums. I make it a habit to write down all my ideas—even the ones that seem a bit wild—so I can revisit them and keep my imagination flowing. My friends also play a big part in my creative spark; they’re a constant source of inspiration and motivation. Creativity, to me, is about honoring all the layers of who I am and letting that shine through in every project
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My journey has been about embracing every creative impulse and trusting the process, whether it leads to a song, a painting, or a visual design. I believe that art is most powerful when it’s raw and true to who you are, and that’s the mindset I carry into everything I create.
Professionally, I’m focused on pushing boundaries within my music and art, blending genres, and finding unique ways to connect with others. I’m committed to showing that art can be a vehicle for self-expression, identity, and even activism. My inspiration often comes from the people around me, especially my friends, who motivate me to keep pushing forward. Ultimately, I want my work to resonate deeply with others and encourage them to express themselves without limitation.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I’ve seen significant growth in my skills, especially in graphic design. Over the years, I’ve taught myself the craft, and now I’m able to incorporate AI as a tool without compromising my creativity—it only enhances it. In music, I’m thrilled to be collaborating more with other artists, which has brought a fresh wave of joy and inspiration into my work.
When it comes to qualities, I’d say my hard work, kindness, and ability to build a strong community have been the most impactful. I’ve always believed that surrounding yourself with like-minded people and supporting one another helps elevate everyone’s creative journey.
For those just starting out, my biggest piece of advice is to avoid following trends. If you’re just mimicking what others are doing, you’ll struggle to stand out, and people will lose interest. Be yourself—don’t be afraid to show your true colors. Authenticity is what attracts attention, and it’s what makes your voice unique. Trust me, people will catch on. Embrace your individuality, because that’s what makes creativity thrive.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Right now, the biggest challenge I’m facing is the oppressive laws and systemic discrimination in my country, where racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, and bigotry are being legalized, making it harder for people like me to exist. In response, I’m using my creativity as a platform for protest, amplifying voices and raising awareness. Building a strong community is essential, as it fosters support and solidarity in these difficult times.
It’s also crucial to check in on those around you—especially on Black friends, trans individuals, women, and marginalized communities. Kindness, respect, and empathy are key. Acknowledge the struggles that these communities face and, above all, offer your support. True change begins with understanding and standing up for one another
