We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marquita Greene. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marquita below.
Hi Marquita, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
Being neurodivergent I believe that I already have a unique perspective on communicating, which has pushed me to adapt and refine my approach based on my audience. I believe in listening to hear others in oppose to response, gives me an opportunity to learn more about the person I am conversing with. This not only allows me to develop trust with others but to make sure the person I’m conversing with feels heard, understood and know they have a safe space to express themselves. It also gives me to take necessary steps for advocacy or provide resources for people which really has influenced the way I engage with people.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an Artivist, Professional Brand Developer and community advocate I have a background in healthcare, human resources and business development. My work spans from branding and consulting to event coordination and nonprofit advocacy.
I’m currently preparing to launch Greene Colors in mid-May, a brand dedicated to empowering individuals through personal branding, success mindset, and professional growth. This initiative creates a safe space for women and allies (ages 18-40) to share resources, build communication skills, and foster meaningful connections. My focus is on branding, digital products, and consulting services that help individuals establish their identity and leverage their strengths for success.
Book Signing (May 2025)
As a co-author in The Overcomers Anthology: Volume II, I am preparing for a book signing event to engage with readers and discuss my chapter. My chapter focuses on overcoming challenges in the foster care system and breaking the silence on taboo topics, encouraging others to speak out, heal, and advocate for change. The event will serve as a platform for discussions on resilience, healing, and personal empowerment.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience has been at the core of my journey. Growing up in the foster care system, navigating personal loss, and overcoming various life challenges forced me to develop a mindset that thrives on perseverance. No matter the setbacks, I learned to adapt and keep moving forward.
One of the most impactful skills I’ve developed is the ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. Whether it’s advocating for causes, building brands, or organizing events, strong communication skills have been essential in every aspect of my work.
Strategic Thinking & Execution by turning ideas into action has been a game-changer for me. Whether launching Greene Colors, organizing Women Who Connect, or planning my upcoming book signing event in May, strategic thinking has allowed me to move from vision to execution successfully.
I would like to encourage people by saying it is important that you View challenges as opportunities for learning rather than obstacles. Every setback is a stepping stone to success. Intentionally expand your Network, Engage in communities aligned with your passions and goals. Build relationships that are mutually beneficial and based on genuine connection. Surround yourself with people who uplift and challenge you. Having a mentor or a strong support system can make all the difference. Dream big, but stay focused on execution. Start small, test your ideas, and scale up as you go. Stay committed to life long learning, Stay informed on trends, tools, and best practices in your field.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
One of the most influential figures in my journey has been Dr. Elizabeth Jennings. From the moment I connected with her through Open Fire International Fellowship, she has played a crucial role in shaping my leadership, integrity, and strategic thinking.
Dr. Jennings has been a guiding force in my personal and professional growth, helping me sharpen my skills in networking, business development, and event coordination. Through her mentorship, I have learned how to create impactful initiatives and bring people together for meaningful change.
Working alongside her in this space has strengthened my ability to build relationships, facilitate important conversations, and empower others.
Her teachings on accountability and integrity have reinforced the importance of operating with honesty, empathy, and a commitment to uplifting others. She has not only influenced my career but has also encouraged me to fully step into my role as a Professional Brand Developer and advocate.
