We were lucky to catch up with Marquitta Beasley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marquitta , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I’ve been the darkest person in the room
everywhere I go since a child . I’ve learned to not be exactly what I look like or what they expect . Call it what you want but inside I’m a chamillion , I speak appropriately or as they called it in my community “white “ ,
I’ve learned to be not only the darkest person in the room but the smartest and most intelligent and well spoken . It’s like a surprise when they speak to me over the phone and then meet me in person . Got ya . 🥰

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a Mogul , Model ,Creative & serial MOM-preneur .” (The last one being the most important !) Ranging From photography , to promotion and marketing with a few things in between. Haus of Blaq offers a unique creative process for whatever your business or brand may need . I’ve recently begun to obtain contracts with some local daycares and organizations to curate content and branding specific to their business . So stay tuned for that .

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back the most impactful areas of knowledge had to be in the trial and error phase . I had several businesses before deciding to focus more on photography and content . I couldn’t niche down because I’m good at too much , but through research and trials I found not what just worked for me but using all of the things I love as a focal point . I’ll never get tired of my job because I catered it to the future I’m planning ahead . Lastly learning to listen and not only be heard has helped me to get into rooms no degree ever could .

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth within the last two months would be learning balance in all aspects of my life . From work to personal relationships and most importantly , family . Time management played a big part too . I had to improve that in order to really see the balance I was aiming for .
