Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marta & Silvia from Nobili Marques Arquitectura. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marta & Silvia, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Creativity is essential in architecture design. Design is all around us and we get inspiration from the work of other architects, designers, artists and creators: from fashion and landscape design to the work of chefs, looking at magazines, travelling, meeting people and having new experiences. We are also energized by the challenges clients bring with each project.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
We founded Nobili Marqués Arquitectura three years ago, after over 20 years each of working as architects in high-end residences, wineries and hospitality buildings across the globe. Silvia and I both come from Europe (Italy and Spain respectively) and we wanted to have the ability to intertwine our European and American design sensibilities into our designs.
Nobili Marqués Arquitectura’s objective is to implement forward-thinking design that provides high quality, personalized solutions for our clients, in a manner that emphasizes how buildings can positively affect those who occupy and experience them. To achieve this, we endeavor to understand the site, its opportunities and unique qualities, as well as the clients’ goals and needs. We believe in creating a seamless experience between the inside and the outside by developing concepts and selecting appropriate materials so that the building and site complement one another. We give careful consideration to the selection of the project team to ensure that the technical solutions they provide enhance the design intent, as well as make for the delivery of a successful project through a collaborative process.
Architecture, as a discipline, has always had the duty to provide safe, practical and compelling buildings, and our work emphasizes the connection between design, resiliency, and the human experience. More globally, we also strive to promote talented, emerging organizations that share our same beliefs in high quality design, and in the betterment of the profession and the process of construction in general. All projects have a local and global impact, which means they can only be truly successful when the larger context they are part of is considered.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three skills we consider very important are:
Creativity, because in any design journey one has to be able to see things differently, sometimes radically, and still meet the clients’ expectations.
Attention to detail, to make sure the final result is true to the initial design concept, and that this intent is not lost along the way.
Active listening, to fully understand what clients and the teams we work with want and need at each step, to communicate effectively when something needs to change and develop designs that achieve the project goals.
We believe these skills are universal to any job; for anyone who is starting we would recommend to not be afraid of asking questions or clarifications, to not assume that because something has been done one way before that is the only right way to achieve a desired result, to question yourself often, and to always be eager to learn new things.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
The process is more challenging when we are working with clients who have a strong interest in, and appreciation for, all forms of design and creativity. We find that clients with this knowledge push our ideas to areas we might have not explored otherwise because they are constantly looking for something unique to them.
