We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Martha Gaffney. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Martha below.
Martha, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I had a rough childhood growing up so I believe I get my resilience from there. Children that grow up in a rough environment have a choice as adults to go one way or the other. That means rebel towards not a good path or decide to mold themselves to become better people and learn from what they went through. Those children tend to mature faster and also dream big when they decide to make something of themselves.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I bought my first condo when I was 18. I was extremely lucky. I had an idea of building stability for myself and a family. I got the chance and took it. I was young and looking for an idea of what to do for work and my life. I was suggested real estate, during the purchase process of my first condo & I loved it.
I interned in a small real estate office and later found myself studying for the test to become a sales agent. I got a lucky stride and became very successful rather quick. It was a great achievement for me since I was so young and young looking at the time; with little experience.
My focus is to help my clients on residential transactions whether that is a purchase, a sale, a rental, or help them manage their investment. My style is very tailored to the client in a boutique fashion way. It is a very down to earth and real style. No sale gimmicks.
I manage my business by being direct and connecting with the right customer. Customers we work with are relaxed because they know we can handle their business and they understand our family operations.
I love that I can help them obtain their goals. I enjoy executing my own decisions of how to run the business. I get excited every time I have a new blog & a new marketing idea. Those things require a lot of thinking and creative.
Our brand is down to earth, smart, savvy, professional and family operated. Everyone knows you will often see me with our son at an appointment or showing, or have seen me working pregnant or my husband lending a hand.
We currently expanded and added property management to our services; also our electrical services company (sister company- NGG Electric).
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Consistency
Tenacity
Risk Taking
The three keys to pushing through.
Real Estate is not the same it was 20 years ago so if you want to enter the market now you need to know people or enter a firm that can give you sure business not dead end leads. Regardless you will need all three. You will need to practice until you develop skill so it means being consistent, Tenacity- just be brave & risk-taking- follow your heart and know that when and if you fail it’s just a learning lesson and don’t become afraid to try again.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My husband… after suffering a severe failure in my life he picked me up again and helped me rebuild hope and belief in me. I think it’s important to have the right circle of friends or family or someone in your life to help you. The wrong circle will stop you from achieving what you are meant to.
