We recently connected with Martha Sanchez M and have shared our conversation below.
Martha, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I’ve always believed that you need a lot of inspiration to be creative. It can be an inspiration for yourself or it can also be something or someone that inspires you. I’ve always seen myself as an inspiration to keep my creativity alive as I put different challenges to myself every time I can. If I ever feel I can’t work on a project or anything at all and my creativity is missing I try to take some time to myself and think, or talking to friends and explaining my mind helps give myself the space needed for creativity and inspiration. I try to learn different things every day or a new skill to keep my work motivated but also entertaining. Besides myself, other creatives that work with me always have great ideas or feedback so I try to show my work to the most people I can to get different inputs and do the best I can with more knowledge than just mine.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a tailoring and simulation artist using 3D elements for Animation or live-action features. Tailoring consists of transforming a 2D concept art to 3D fitting the character and following the Art Direction of the project. With a lot of communication between artists, producers, and directors, I help to make their desired clothes for the character or project. Simulation is done after the clothes are tailored and ready to work in shots. This is making sure the clothes from the shot you are given act following again the Art Direction but also the physics of fabric. You will need to find a balance between these two depending on the project.
The past few years I’ve had the opportunity to work on several projects as well as my own Senior Film named “Dahlia” A minute and a half-short film about the love of a dad and his daughter while dancing. Besides this, I also had the amazing opportunity of being a Character TD Intern at The Walt Disney Animation Studios in which I was able to increase my skills while learning from amazing people and mentors.
If you are interested in having clothes for your 3D Character or want any feedback please don’t doubt to contact me here:

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience, I believe this is one of the most important skills you should have no matter what you do. In my case, there are times when patience is needed while working, especially when you are working on a big team. It is always amazing having different people and different views, but sometimes the opinion you have may be different from someone else’s. However, you will always find the best way to approach it using both ideas with the help of patience and communication.
Don’t be afraid to apply or join different projects. You never know where this might lead you and who you can meet. Always allow yourself to expand your network and try something new. If you see a job or a project you like do not be afraid and go for it, it will teach you something new no matter the finish line of that project or job.
Be open to new things, technology changes every day, there are new tools every day. Do not let yourself get used to the same procedure because it always keeps getting better. Be open to getting out of your comfort zone and you will learn new things you never thought of.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I am a person that gets stressed out easily especially when I can not figure out how to complete a task and keep getting lost. However these are the moments that define us as artists, you can either go safe with something you already know it’s going to work, or you can go crazy and try to do the best you can while challenging your skills. For me is always the second option, because if I always go safe then when do I let myself grow? No matter how stressed or overwhelmed you are feeling don’t be afraid to do something different, it might work better than you think.
