Meet Martin Hill

We were lucky to catch up with Martin Hill recently and have shared our conversation below.

Martin, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

Great question! There have been many times in my life when I’ve been the only person in the room who looks like me. I believe in the saying “Carpe Diem,” which means to seize the day. I use those opportunities to debunk stereotypes for those who will come after me.

From my youth to manhood, being the only one in the room has been a catalyst for my growth. It pushed me to adapt and become culturally aware. I strive to exude black opulence in everything I do, and this is no exception. I can attribute my confidence to my mother, who taught me to walk with assurance and own the room.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Absolutely! Here’s a bit about my journey and what I’m focused on professionally:

I’m Martin Hill, a proud graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. I continued my education at Clark Atlanta University, obtaining both a Master of Public Administration focused on Community and Economic Development and an MBA. I’m also a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma, Fraternity, Inc., which has empowered communities and black men worldwide for over a century.

As a dedicated community servant, I became a Charter Member of the Emerging 100 South Metro Atlanta Chapter in 2017. Through my leadership, I’ve launched impactful programs like the Best Foot Forward initiative, the Step It Up for Better Health campaign, and the Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway. In recognition of my contributions, I received proclamations from both the Cities of Atlanta and East Point in 2024 for completing over 100 hours of community service through the Emerging 100 Black Men of South Metro.

One of my recent highlights was serving as a host committee member for the Crossties Gala, which raised over $100,000 to support uninsured individuals at Grady Hospital, Georgia’s only Level 1 Trauma Center. I also currently serve as the Vice Chair of the Skyview High School Board, where I oversee a multi-million-dollar institution that supports over 350 students from underserved communities in Metro Atlanta.

On a personal note, I’m an avid swimmer and founded SwimBosss. This mobile swimming business has transformed the lives of over 100 individuals in Atlanta by teaching them essential swimming skills. My passion for water safety not only helps boost confidence but also debunks stereotypes among youth and adults alike.

Professionally, I work as a Cloud Deployment Manager at a Software as a Service company, located in Dublin, Ireland, where I’ve spent the last several years leading high-impact projects in product development and strategic roadmaps. I have a proven track record of driving revenue growth, reducing operational costs, and launching innovative products like eTranscript and eDiploma systems. In my current role, I collaborate with Software Engineers, Cloud Engineers, and C-Suite Executives to deliver top-notch software solutions to three multi-million-dollar Canadian insurance companies.

I’m excited about the future and look forward to continuing my work in both the community and in the tech space!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back on my journey, I believe the three most impactful qualities have been resilience, adaptability, and community engagement. Here’s how they shaped my path and some advice for those early in their journeys:

1. Resilience
Resilience has been crucial in overcoming challenges and setbacks. Life is full of obstacles, but maintaining a positive mindset and pushing through difficult times has helped me grow stronger.

Advice: Embrace failures as learning opportunities. When things don’t go as planned, reflect on what went wrong and how you can improve. Building a strong support network can also help you bounce back more effectively.

2. Adaptability
Being adaptable has allowed me to navigate different environments and roles throughout my career. Whether transitioning between educational paths or adjusting to new professional challenges, flexibility has been key.

Advice: Stay open to change and be willing to step out of your comfort zone. Seek diverse experiences and learn from them. The more you expose yourself to different situations, the better you’ll become at adapting.

3. Community Engagement
Engaging with my community has not only enriched my life but also provided valuable insights into the needs and challenges of those around me. This engagement has informed my work and inspired me to create impactful programs.

Advice: Get involved in your community, whether through volunteering, joining local organizations, or simply connecting with people. Building relationships and understanding different perspectives can enhance your personal and professional growth.

Final Thoughts
For anyone early in their journey, remember that growth takes time. Focus on developing these qualities, and don’t hesitate to seek mentorship or guidance from those who have walked a similar path. Stay curious, keep learning, and be proactive in creating opportunities for yourself!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My mother has been my greatest support in overcoming life’s challenges. Throughout the years, she has created a healing space for me, guiding me through tough times. From an early age, she taught me the importance of leading with intention and not just following the crowd. Even in my darkest moments, she has been a shining light, showing me that with just a little faith, we can conquer anything life throws our way. Her strength and wisdom inspire me every day.
