Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marva Soogrim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marva , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Growing up on the island of Trinidad and coming from a large family, we learned early on in life that work was very important and we were taught to do chores around the house. We had structure in our day and knew what our duties were. From the age of four and a half, I had to wake up by 4:30 in the morning and head to the beach along with my other siblings to meet our father’s boat as he docked with his overnight catch of fish. I would follow my older siblings to learn how to bring in the fish, his tools, lunch box and wet fisherman cloak. To me, it was fun as I loved waking up while it was still dark and going to the beach.
Other mornings, we took small buckets and would go to the springs to bring water home. We walked for about two miles to get to the springs, filled up our buckets and then walked back home. Sometimes, we would make two trips before we went to school. At an early age, I went to live with relatives. I found myself always willing to do the work. I realized that my parents were teaching us a sustainable work ethic that I carry to this day. I have always attributed those early days to my success.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been working as a newborn care specialist and mommy caregiver helping families bring “Calm to the Chaos” of new parenting. When the parents are calm, the household is calm. My work encourages mothers to connect with their own intuition so they can guide themselves as opposed to counting on others to guide them. Mothers have found themselves to be less anxious and more confident in this part of their journey.
After 40+ years of baby care and mommy care work, I have been greatly fulfilled with many experiences. Having seen a variety of different family dynamics and being in the mix of it all, I want to open my Marvalous treasure vault of knowledge to the world sharing support and offering wisdom to help ease the woes of the new parenting journey. And now, I am accessible to all parents through my Marvalous Parent brand, which includes the Marvalous Parent Chats on my website.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have helped me are showing up to work on time, having a tidy appearance in my scrubs attire and helping my clients alleviate their feelings of being overwhelmed during this new chapter. Being on time helps my client to know that I am reliable and someone they can depend on. Since you are always in close proximity to the parents handing off their baby, proper hygiene shows that you prioritize self-care and their kids are in good hands. Alleviating new parents from being overwhelmed helps them to relax more, rest better and trust that they are in great care. For anyone entering this field of work, they should try to have these qualities along with love, passion, patience and the ability to operate on less sleep than usual.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
About 20 years ago, I read “Man’s Search for Meaning.” Viktor E. Frankl, the author of the book, survived the Auschwitz concentration camp during the Second World War. The offering I took from the book was that we humans are very resilient and can survive unsurvivable situations at times and ultimately find new meaning and purpose for our lives. I have used this mindset to persevere through any hardships and challenges that I have faced in my life.
