Meet Mary K. Savarese

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mary K. Savarese a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary K., really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

My purpose found me! I am now a traditionally published fiction Author but it took a journey, a ten year journey to achieve my dream. My genre, fantasy adventure novels, intertwined with romance have garnered numerous awards and achieved best-selling status but not overnight.

I have to ask, what came first, a newly furnished purpose for me or the journey? Well, actually both. It is true we have many purposes and take many journeys. For me first, adulting and a financial career, then marriage and raising my family. Then a further question begged to be asked and answered : What purpose was next?

I have always had a dream. I wanted to write fantasy novels, but life always put it on the back burner. As I experienced empty nesting, in both good and hard ways, that new purpose presented itself and gave me new purpose. Writing fantasy adventure novels brought me joy. A joy that I wanted to share with others.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I love to be called a ‘Creative’. I love to create fantasy adventure novels for my readers. A place where you can escape to from every day’s realities. That’s what my writing does for me, takes me on my own adventure and I hope will yours.

I am known for my quirky titles:
Tigers Love Bubble Baths & Obsession Perfume (who knew!) A mystery romance intertwined with the Supernatural.

The StarWriters Trilogy: Fantasy adventures intertwined with romances,

Book 1, The Girl In The Toile Wallpaper and now in Audiobook
Book 2, The StarWriters Club. Help me make my latest release a best seller!
Book 3, Return The Girl In The Toile Wallpaper, coming soon

There are backstories to all my titles. That is where my idea begins, the title comes first from an experience in my life. It was at a visit to a ‘Big Cat’ Reserve in Florida that I witnessed a gorgeous 600 pound Siberian Tiger jump into a vat of bubbles and have Obsession perfume sprayed on his tongue, hence the title and the mystery adventure was formed.

The Girl In The Toile Wallpaper. I love Toile so much, an artistic wallcovering and fabric that tells a story. So I created love, betrayal and adventure. The Audiobook narrated by the amazing Laura Schreiber was just awarded Silver in The International Readers Favorites.

The StarWriters Club, just published, takes place in the ethereal. It’s theme, For It Is Written In The Stars…..is taken from throughout books 1 and 3. It came from grief and helped me through it as it inspired my characters.

If there is a take-away: Never, Ever, give up on your own dreams, goals and ambitions. It may take a while as it took me ten years to realize my dream of becoming a traditionally published Fiction Author.

You can connect with me on www.maryksavarese.com and find my adventure novels on Amazon, Barnes and Nobles and any independent bookstore which always needs you to stop by. The Audiobook for The Girl in the Toile Wallpaper is Audible and everywhere Audiobooks may be sold.

Let me take you on a journey!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. I have a Passion writing fantasy adventures. It gives me joy.
2. I had to hone my craft by writing. I had to stick with it daily but at the same time it gave me joy.
3. I had to develop a thick skin: ten years of rejection after rejection. What kept me going, joy in writing, creating worlds. My dream finally came true and it’s all stepping stones from there.

What I’m trying to say, if you have a fire in your belly, it is part of your soul, it gives you joy, believe in yourself, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, and never, ever, give up on yourself. Hobbies may just have a way of becoming future purposes!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

I give utmost credit to my Editor, Lynn Moon and Indignor House Publishing. It only takes one person to believe in you. Editors are tough for a reason. They want to make your manuscript into the best possible book and nurture your journey. I had to learn to let go at times and trust her voice. I have enjoyed the journey though at times I had fought it.
