We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mary Kendall. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mary below.
Mary, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Wait…people can overcome imposter syndrome? (wink)

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
It starts with a germ of an idea that can unravel and take many turns and twists and then might—just might—became a tale worth telling. That’s what I do. I am a fiction writer.
I just hit the five year anniversary of my first publishing contract (yay, me!) and, in that time, have reaped the rewards that a writing life can bring. The biggest being the ones I never knew about—connecting with readers and other authors in the meeting ground that books can provide.
My next novel (the fifth), The Redux of Sam Murdoch, will be released this coming year in August 2026. It is a twisty, dark tale about a man stuck in a midlife meltdown with a broken marriage, angry offspring and a crumbling career, who stumbles upon a long-buried family secret: the grandfather he idolized once shot a man. Desperate for an escape (and some answers), he hits the open road in a beat-up Volvo station wagon with his eccentric college buddy, Godfrey, on a quest for truth. But Sam’s little adventure to solve riddles about his family history shifts to something else altogether along the way as a gothicky, folk horror nightmare rolls out.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Stubborn gene
2. Steep learning curves
3. Love of the written word
Advice: “Don’t quit before the miracle happens.”

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Go take a walk. Movement is medicine and good for what ails you.
