Meet Mary Nemec

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mary Nemec a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Mary, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

I think as women we are taught to be humble, soft and gracious with everything. I say f!*#% that! I was raised to be very confident, and that was instilled in me at a very young age. Things like nobody is you and that my thoughts mattered, that what I was thinking was valuable. I was taught that when you walk into a room you hold your head high, you act like you’ve been there before and you act like you’re not impressed. I was raised with 2 brothers and my parents didn’t teach me to be any different than them. A very gender neutral household. I think as women we are so scared to be looked at or critiqued or stand out cause what if they don’t like us. What if we are hard to swallow or not pleasant in someone’s eyes. I’ve really had to work on the thought process “then those aren’t your people.” At the end of the day you have to live with you, you have to look in the mirror and be OK with what you bring to the table. I love to stand out. I love to be different. I love that I’m unique. I love that I’m Neuro spicy, I love that I’m loud. I love that I have a loud laugh. I love that I’m different. There isn’t a lot that I could be shamed for cause I know what I am. I like who I am. I’m unique and I try to take that into every situation that I’m in. I think confidence is a game until you become it fully! It takes time. Be YOU!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a lash and brow specialist in Portland, Oregon. I’ve been an a
esthetician for about five years. I own my own business and have for about 2 years. I offer brow lamination, lash lift, full body, waxing and dermaplaning. I love what I do. I love creating the relationships with my clients. I love getting to know people on a deeper level while doing their eyebrows or lashes. I’m a very social person. I like to be around people and I love all things beauty. I think my favorite service is Lash lifts. Lash lift are so meticulous. I love that you can tweak them in so many different ways for different looks. And most of all I love the clients reaction when they see their lashes lifted for the first time. It’s such a gift to see someone light up about their lashes. Hearing “oh my gosh, are those my lashes or did you add lashes in” and when I get to say “no that’s all you”, my job is done. My heart is full. I’d love for you to come see me if you’re in the Portland area. Hit me up! I’d love to see you!!!!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I worked in the restaurant industry for 10 years . I think I’ve had every job in the front of the house possible, and I loved it! Before I got into the restaurant world I could barely talk to people, I was so incredibly shy. I thank my restaurant days for making me who I am. I don’t think that I could own my own business if I didn’t have those 10 years of restaurant industry work. I think those 10 year taught me how to treat people well not only how to speak with them but to take care of them in such a way that they feel seen. I think my advice for people who are just starting out and owning their own business is to treat people well. Treat people with a soft heart and a kind heart, listen, like really listen. That will get you 10 times farther than any discount would. I feel like these days we forget to care deeply about people and we’re so focused on content for social media or getting people in the door, that we forget to treat people well and give them the experience they deserve. That would be my advise.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am always so interested in Collab with anybody I would love to do package deals and giveaways and fun things on social media so if you’re in the market to do fun things in Portland, Oregon together, I would love to!!!!!You can always hit me up on social media. I’m on there all the time!
